Interleaving Bt Line

[link to this post]

About 4 months ago when I had a speed issue, Bt(Indian Tech support) turned off interleaving (There suggestion). I had a consistent speed increase of about 500kbps. Since then I have had sporadic drops of the same amount, rang up and after the usual scripted conversation, they switched it back off. Speed back to normal.

6 weeks ago when Vision was installed the same speed drop occurred. Bt insist interleaving is off.

I used the DMT tool which says interleaving is on. Is this result reliable.? Or who is correct BT or DMT?

Does anybody know if Vision requires interleaving?

How do I get BT to turn interleaving off permanently?

Thanks

You must be on an old version of the hub firmware as DMT doesnt work with the latest 6.2.2.6 version.

But you should be able to use the home hub itself to tell you if interleaving is on or not.

This is taken from another post on here:

-------------------------
Go to command prompt

telnet 192.168.1.254
user: admin
Pass: admin
>menu

use the arrows to get to [adsl] and hit enter

use arrows to get to expand and hit return
>enabled
hit enter

tab to <ok> and hit return

look where it says channel path and it will say fast or interleave.

Interleaving is a form of error correction if a line is constantly throwing errors up (something the DSLAMs at the exchange monitor for) or is really unstable.

As such, I wouldn't have thought that BTVision needs interleaving switched on, however it could be handy to stop the stream from getting small corruptions which 'Freeview' boxes can sometimes suffer from with a loud click through the speakers and a checkerboard effect and / or frozen picture for a second or two.

See, I don't always slag BT off

However last time I trie a hub a week ago, it did say it was on. I have quoted that to be who said not to take any notice of that MMMm.

I will leave alone for now if it may help vision.

Thanks, wouls seem conclusive interleaving must be on. 3 different things say so.
Hub, DMT and 2500v.

I will have a try with tech support again to get it switched off and see how it goes

Thanks all

DMT says my interleave is on when it isn't. To tell whether you have interleaving applied, look for FEC errors. I seem to remember Voyagers also will display the interleave status.

The settings for interleave at the sharp end are 'opt in, auto, opt out' so the question is whether they are setting it to auto or opt out if it keeps changing.

Also Vision appeared to start a new 'training period' on max when I had it fitted.

Try emailing broadband support via the contact-us form on the bt website

Tell them that interleaving is affecting your ping on gaming and could they please turn it off.

I did that and they turned it off for me, its been off ever since.

I emailed BT as suggested, even managed to find an email from them promissing me Interleaving was off which I referred to.
I did not get an acknowledgement as stated, so rang Tech support. Once past the usual script(Cut short by me) i was promissed Interleaving will be permanently of in 48 hours.

We will see.

Last question for anybody, do you lose service for any length of time. India told me 24 hours loss. Somehow I hope not. Its only switching. Last time I did not notice it had been off line.

When I got interleaving switched back to 'Fast Path' all I suffered was a resync, which lasted all of a few seconds.

AFAIK all they do is send a request to BTWholesale who'll then simply use a computer to issue a command to your account to tell the DSLAM to turn the interleaving state to the "Fast Path" mode.

This is done in a couple of clicks.. (or rather should be)

Does the Voyager report interleaved and do you have FEC errors?

When interleave is switched to 'opt out' it just involves a dropped connection, there won't be any downtime. The BT Help section say give them 48 hours to action. The change is probably queued on the Wholesale systems as when my interleave status was changed, it took about 3 hours to happen from when the button was pressed so i expect them giving themselves 24 hours to do it and 24 hours for it to happen.

If it has come on again, I expect it is due to the Vision retraining period overriding the previous settings.

Yes 2500v does report interleaved(Wish I realised that before) no FEC errors shown.

Right, Don't fully understand your explanation of procedure, but I am a non techie silver surfer. Sorry smooth surfer. No matter the answer is enough for me "there won't be any downtime" Musn't hurt my brain with the rest.

Yeah the rest was just me rambling

It is odd that there are no FEC errors as the C stands for 'correction' which is what the interleave should be doing. Maybe the trustee old Voyager is playing up Might be worth comparing with the dreaded Hub for a while to see if that reports similar.

Success. Thanks to you all. Interleaving was switched to fast over night. That after several random blips in service during Sunday evening. now syncing 600 kbps up. Improvements in snr etc. Hopefully it will stabilise my line a bit(Wishful thinking). Will try my hub again when my replacement Vision Box arrives(Don't want to go there)

All change took was an email Saturday evening and afollow up call to India. Bt responded positevely to my email and changed the setting ahead of schedule.

So thanks for your guidance randomjointer and dragon2611 and the rest.

FAST! Hope this is the correct setting. Its doing the trick

Thank you all. A positive response from BT for all the doubters.

Pete
