Well that's the BT engineer been and gone

[link to this post]

He says that there is NOT a fault on the line and it is connecting at just over 1meg.

Here is the info from speedtester.bt.com taken just after his visit:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 384 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 97 kbps

This is the info from my router:

Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 384 Kbps 448 Kbps
Noise Margin 9.0 dB 14.0 dB
Line Attenuation 57.5 dB 31.5 dB
Output Power 13.9 dBm 11.9 dBm

It is possible that the modem he used was connecting at over 1Mbps.

Why? The data from your router suggests while a long line and a 9dB target margin, your modem is syncing to the margin and then backing the power levels off - this is a common Home Hub trait.

I'd suggest buying a Speedtouch 585 or borrowing routers from others to see how they sync on your line.

What is your router now?
The Home Hub is generally fine on medium lines, but does seem to err to much on the stability side and thus give poor speeds on long lines.

The router being used just now is a BT Voyager 2100.

The homehub did not provide a stable connection at all.

Ok in the past people have seen poor info from long lines on the 2100 too.

If the engineer connects at 1Mbps and you don't when plugging it into the same location it tells me that the modem is the issue, when he plugged in his kit, it would have had the same target noise margin applied.

Well your downloading about right for your IP profile as its @ 135...If they cant find any errors on the line you could ask BT to reset your IP profile and see if it makes any difference because I have seen IP profile get stuck @ 135 and never move untill the profile is reset.

It won't be a stuck profile as the engineer connected at 1meg.

It may be worth investing in a Netgear DSG834G. It has been my experience that they sync slightly faster, especially on very long lines better than some of the BT kit - the HH included.

my old 2100 was rock solid on my old line but gave a very low synch compared to other equipt and as andrew has pointed out the hh is very poor on long lines

Sorry...you're wrong. IP profile has doesn't affect sync speed. You could sync at 8Mb and still have a profile stuck very low.

Nope but if the enginner got a 1 meg with his equipment it clearly points at an equipment problem !!

I had a stuck BRAS profile for months so I know all about them when they had the 2meg stuck profiles when max'd first came out !!

The point is IF it was a stuck profile the enginner would have got the same results on the line as the OP did and NOT a better result !!
