poor broadband after voice line fault repair

[link to this post]

Hi folks,
Earlier this week our telephone played up, crackles, erratic ring and wrong connections.
Engineer spoke to me on phone while I was away at work and said he needed access to house, but as I was not there he would check the line and call me later. When he called again it was to say he had found the fault and that it had been fixed (yay!).
The next morning had more crackling. Bt called, engineer visited to check my line from house and could find no fault. The line was quiet and has remained so
but my internet connection has slowed hugely, prompting me to check my modem stats, which are now like this (10pm):

Uptime: 1 day, 0:57:15

Modulation: G.992.1 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 1,760

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 41.41 / 531.50

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 17.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 63.5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 17.0 / 3.0

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 105 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 3,953,710

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 41,853

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 21,992

Line Profile: Interleaved

Before the line fault the modem (BT Home Hub) showed a sync of about 3700, with snr in region of 9. The line attenuation has also jumped makedly from (from memory) 52 to 63.5

The home hub is plugged directly to test socket with phone unplugged. Nothing else is connected in my home.

BT speed test shows IP profile of 1500
DSL connection rate 448kbps UP and 1760 kbps DOWN
actual ip throughput achieved during test was 1291 kbps

I think my profile used to be 3200?

I have emailed broadband support who sent links to do the usual tests, which I have done and replied with results, stats etc, but these have been ignored (so far - 48hrs).

Does anyone have any views on anything else I can try, what the problem may be or who and how I would be best contacting to get this sorted.

many thanks for any help...

Dave

Just wait it out Dave. Wait a couple of days. BT came out fixed my voice fault and then it got worse before it turned rock solid again

What you could do is download RouterStats Light. Its very easy to set up and just make sure it monitors your line and graphs. Take a little bit of setting up (tick boxes and password) Also when it opens to go the setup tab at the top then back to Noise tab and scroll up the graph to find the graph line.

Does that work with the homehub? I didn't think it did.

Thanks Paul and Shtu for your responses.

speedtest this evening shows:
IP profile for your line is - 1500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1824 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 782 kbps

..so connection rate up a tad, but snr on modem stats now sat at 2.0db.

I have had an email from BT support stating that they "have already run a line test and it is evident that there could be a Line Fault"

They asked that I email them back to arrange a 'call back', whatever that may be, so I'll do that and see what happens.

In the meantime I'll try RouterStats and see what that shows.

I'll post back to say what happens.

cheers,
Dave

Paul.

Does Routerstats work on the version 1.5 Home Hub. I cant get it to work here.

Cheers.

**Oppps Just noticed, on Routerstats log in they have "Admin" with a capital "A" once I changed it to "admin" it worked fine. Well I think it was that

routerstats lite. Running fine on my hub 1.5

make sure to set up either logging via a txt file or using the graphs it makes. Currently have both going on.

Hi folks,
quick update for those with similar probs or are otherwise interested:

Had call back from BT chap who took details of my stats and bt speedtest, went away did some test or other and said he thought there may be a fault on my line. Was told engineer would contact me next day and took my mobile number as I would be at work.
No calls at alloted time to mobile but came home to message on answer phone saying connection should be faster.

BT speedtest: IP profile 750kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbsp (up) and 1056 kbps (down)
Actual throughput achieved: 598 kbps...

bah..

my profile over last few days has been up and down (as high as 1500) and syncing as high as 1856 kbps (still not great though). Throughpuit equally variable.
The line dropped overnight also which wont have helped I guess.

Called BT back and the lady took connection stats and then put me on hold while she spoke to someone else.
I also mentioned that the attenuation is still high at 63.5 and snr is lower and jumps about much more than before.

They are now going to re-set my BRAS, but couldn't understand what that meant other than waiting for 6-7 days to see how it goes.
Am I right in thinking that the line will be going through it's re-training period again? should I leave the hub on (I leave it on all the time at the moment).
Could someone tell me if the attenuation of 63.5 could be part of the problem (used to be 52), I guess I just need convincing that a BRAS reset wil help, as I stil think this is all a result of the fix to stop crackling on line.

Thanks for any thoughts, help, or opinions... just trying to understand how I can help solve my problem.
Dave

your att has gone up hencce your synch has gone down i would think that your line has been rerouted making it longer as part of the voice fix
