BT Yahoo Email Security Upgrade (Error 553)

[link to this post]

Were re-starting the changes were making to how users send email using BTs SMTP servers today. Well be gradually rolling these out to all our customers over the next few weeks.

These changes are intended to help prevent identity fraud and spam while also protecting you from 'spoofing' - when people use alternate addresses to disguise an email's real sender, possibly to commit fraud.

If you use our SMTP servers to send email where the From address does not match your BT Yahoo! Email address then you will need to verify that From address on that account using a simple on-line form. If you try and send from a non verified email address youll get an Error 553 message.

To avoid this you can find instructions on how to verify your email addresses here

http://www.btyahoo.com/verify

We wont ask you for any personal details but you will need to log in to your account to make the needed changes.

Note: To send from your sub-accounts while using your primary email address you will need to verify your sub-accounts on your primary account.

We originally introduced these changes back in March but the changes affected a significantly larger number of people than we expected so we placed them on hold until we could communicate with all the affected users. Weve now finished emailing everyone affected by this. In addition anyone getting an Error 553 will also receive an email with instructions on how to verify.

We hope this doesn't cause you any inconvenience and appreciate your co-operation.

Thanks

If you look at his profile, it was registered on Wed 31-Oct-07 11:18:58. Could this be proof that BT check these boards (I hope so), though am not banking on them answering any of our questions on here.

Oh no not again - this caused me endless problems before - hope they've actually "Fixed" the problems this time before inflicting it on BT users !!

Well I dont get the page to "Send Verification or Verify" at all - here we go again !!
There is nowhere on the bottom of the page to click verify account !!

I don't understand why people still uses ISP given email addreses anyway. With so many free email services that can be used even when you leave a ISP or even host companies sthat can supply cheap domains and email services like One and one, which cost me about 39 a year, I thought that ISp based email address would have died out by now

this is one thing I don't like about Bt, they will not send any info to a different email address, it have to be their stupid Bt yahoo one. A email address I never check

You can forward the mail out of that account OR you could download via POP3 to a free webmail, Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail support that.

And for this specific issue of SMTP verification you can use GMail's SMTP server. If you configure your GMail account properly it will keep your original FROM address so you can use it either with your btinternet address or your own domain.

By the way Mark_W, Can you tell your Tech Support people not to refer YOUR broadband customers to other e-mail service providers (or ISP's) while they are experiencing problems sending e-mails through BT SMTP ? I was trying to call your Tech Support to tell them about it, but after 45 min waiting in the queue to speak to someone I just simple gave up.
