350kbps IP Profile.......Capping ?

[link to this post]

Hmmm.

Connection rate 4165kbps Downstrean ........448kbps Upstream
IP Profile for line is....350kbps

Two days ago the speed tests were showing 3.7mb.......now I am getting 330kbps if I am lucky.

I'm an Option 3 customer......the 'Unlimited' ( lol ) package.

Mr Saffron commented somewhere in an earlier thread that IP Profile is not changed as a result of FUP. Is that actually the case ? I'm not exactly a light user.......I don't use bit torrent or anything like that but do spend a lot of time in online virtual worlds. But I have no idea what my usage actually is.....it probably exceeds 50gb a month.

The worst aspect of this profile is.....I'm stuck with it 24/7...even at off-peak times. Frankly, it's laughable to even call such a speed 'broadband'. And what's even worse is that I have no idea whether I have actually been capped...there's no warning, nothing whatever from BT !

Also.....being capped is one thing, but reduced to 350kbps is just ludicrous.

AFAIK it is. The FUP is managed by the ISP and the IP profile is managed by Wholesale transparently to the ISP and I am not aware that ISP's can dynamically lower the IP profile .
Have you been able to run the BT Performanc tester to see if you profile has changed?

Yes the 350kbps profile is taken from the BT Speed Tester.

Up until 2 days ago, I was running quite happily with ADSL Speed 4288/448 and download speeds of around 3.7mb.....which is how it's been for almost 2 years.

Then it suddenly drops to download speeds of around 318kbps.......and I checked and saw that the IP profile has changed to 350kbps.The sync speed still says 4288/448.

Well if you constantly maintain that sync the profile should rise by itself in a couple of days; the problem will be if you don't maintain that sync.

Mr Saffron commented somewhere in an earlier thread that IP Profile is not changed as a result of FUP. Is that actually the case ?

Correct.

Your BRAS profile is a product of your sync speed - nothing else.
Your sync speed is a product of the line conditions and kit connected - nothing else.

If the line remains stable, the profile will recover by itself - if it's still like that in three days, that's the time to start investigating.
