BT Broadband Slow downloads for 30 a month!

[link to this post]

Hi

My father has been having issues with BT Broadband for many months now. He used to get download speeds of up to 6.5M, as confirmed by thinkbroadband.com speed checker, since late 2006, this has been reducing to now He gets an annoying 472.03 Kbps.

I've confirmed this, I cannot believe it, his sync speeds are good at 7160kbps, his s/n look good, but he's getting a high number of CRC, FEC Errors, when downloading stuff, is this anything to be concerned about.

He's using a BT Home Hub 1.5, but He's also replaced this with a Linksys HS200 and he gets the same poor download speeds, on occasion he gets 6.5M, but most of the time it's 472.03 Kbps. He finds this unacceptable when he's paying top whack to BT, 30 a month. He's logged calls with BT Support, which told him there was a fault on the line, today he had a visit from a BT Engineer, which connected his laptop with ADSL Modem, did a speedtest and told him I've got 6.5MB at the socket, and went!

He decided to go with BT Broadband, BT Home Hub, BT Telephone line, it's all BT so he was hoping they would find the fault and there would be no issues, if he needed to report a fault to them.

BT speed checker also confirms the same results as thinkbroadband.com.

Any ideas or comments greatly received, what I can do to help my father resolve this?

Here's a graph of speeds since late 2006.

Could you get some results from http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ and the thinkbroadband speedtester during peak time (6pm to midnight) and outside of those hours if possible... should show if its an IP profile issue or traffic management.

My father has had a call back from India Technical Support. They said they have reset his profile, and wait four hours.

He's waited four hours, and re-tested, same results, still slow.

I'll ask my father to run these tests. But so far, in the tests I've performed on his line, outside of peak hours, the performance is [censored]!

Hi,

This appears to be becoming more common with BT, i have been having the same problems for around two months. It was definatley a profile problem, but after many many many calls and even an engineer visit it was not resolved .. .. .. so i called up for my MAC code .. .. .. the next day problem solved! It may have been a coincidence but the long conversation with the non-indian chap that called seems to have been the trigger. Even though my speeds are back up im still looking to jump ship, even paying 120 notes termination charge to do so. I'm not advising you move but maybe a call to disconnections may help?

So you're paying 120 to get away from a service that's now working just fine ???.

Thats quite stupid.

Strange the sync speed is now lower! So it makes sense that throughput is lower, but why has the sync speed fallen?

Looks like theres quite a lot of noise on the line - maybe just at certain times of day due to localised interference as it seems to have really hit the upstream - which is usually fairly resiliant to noise.
