BT HomeHub / Vista / Network ID problem.

[link to this post]

If I remove all wireless networks in the Network & Sharing Center in Vista, then scan for wireless networks, I can see my "BTHomeHub-XXXX " and "BTOpenzone" networks amongst others. If I select BT Home Hub, enter the key and opt to save the network, it asks me if this is public or private for which I select private. This all works fine and putting the mouse over the wireless icon, the ballon pops-up saying Connected To ....BTHomeHub-xxxx (Private network).

However, after restarting Vista, the ballon always shows Connected To

"BTOpenzone (BTHomeHub-XXXX)"

My IP address is within the 192.168...... range so I know for sure that I am connected to the private side of the HomeHub

I can then set this to private but my fear is that connecting to any outside Openzone network would automatically set the network as private instead of public.

The other laptop in the house does exactly the same, so is this an issue with Vista incorrectly identifying the hub, or a bug with the hub? Our 2nd laptop is new, replacing an XP one about a week ago and I was never aware of seeing this with XP.

Thanks in advance...and Happy New Year

Stu, nope thats not the case. If you are connecting to your personal side of the home hub, meaning the BTHomeHub-345F for example then setting that as a home network will cause no problems with Openzones. When you connect to another network say an Openzone or a friends wireless, it will again ask you what type of network this is.

Currently connecting to the personal side of the home hub, Vista doesn't know what an Openzone is as you haven't connect to or defined one before.

Hi paul, the thing is it has Openzone listed as the network name then the hub name in brackets in this format ....

"BTOpenzone (BTHomeHub-XXX)"

So openzone is the network name....I tried connecting to Openzone's unencrypted side and lo and behold, it lists it as private without asking me....so I would guess to any other openzone network would do the same.

IIRC with XP, if I connected to my private side it would list the network as BTHomeHub-XXXX and the public side was just BTOpenzone.....it's as though Vista is somehow combining the 2

[Edit]

Just did a wee experiment and reset the hub to factory settings, thereby dropping the openzone setup......even after deleting the wireless networks in Vista, it would initially list the network as BTHomeHub-xxxx but after a reset it would be

BTOpenzone ( BTHomeHub-xxxx)

Even though there is no longer a Fon config on the Hub.....perhaps Vista caches some wireless network setups somewhere that remains after deleting the network.?

Hmm, I've never seen that before. I reset my hub a few months back and the Fon side of things has never returned, I should get round to enabling it all again.

The only reason I can see Vista combining the two as they would both have the same mac address, but I have connected to wireless access points which have been broadcasting different SSID's and it has been no problem.

I will put it on the to-do list for tomorrow/Sunday!
