This is a joke right?

[link to this post]

Was just trying to play a game online and pings were over 100ms often spiking to 200...

So I decided to do a tracert to a few places - and BT's core network for my connection is horrendous... (as you can see from the first 3 hops this is NOT caused by traffic originating from my side)

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.254.252]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms local.gateway [192.168.1.1]
2 10 ms 8 ms 9 ms 217.32.147.97
3 8 ms 8 ms 9 ms 217.32.147.142
4 14 ms 12 ms 9 ms 213.120.177.82
5 62 ms 67 ms 72 ms 213.120.176.29
6 * 65 ms * 213.120.176.178
7 65 ms 62 ms 65 ms 213.120.176.113
8 68 ms 73 ms 86 ms core1-ge1-0-0.faraday.ukcore.bt.net [194.72.4.17
7]
9 139 ms 144 ms 141 ms 62.172.103.1
10 108 ms 117 ms 114 ms core1-pos9-0.telehouse.ukcore.bt.net [62.6.201.1
18]
11 65 ms 65 ms 66 ms 194.74.65.42
12 61 ms 62 ms 61 ms 212.58.238.129
13 74 ms 75 ms 70 ms rdirslb0.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.136]
14 70 ms 68 ms 76 ms virtual3.rbsov.bbc.co.uk [212.58.254.252]

At this rate even enta *spit* is gonna be a better choice frown

EDIT: Weird asking around a couple of friends and family - and some people are getting it and some have pings sub 20ms all through :| and we are all from the same area.

And yet... I just pulled this speedtest down:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/503149238.png

Usually it would be under 800kbit/s at this time of day...

So what on earth is going on at BT

EDIT: Visual route doing a reverse trace confirms the problem isn't with my end - showing 2 hops with the notation "Hop is responding in an erratic manner, varying between 1 and 185ms response time... blah blah"

packet loss is no joke mate. For what is is worth i always use the "pathping" command from the DOS prompt as it runs a trace and then displays information for every node your route through. Oh and it's free . . .I like free. Try:

pathping www.google.co.uk

Hop 3 is your problem which is on BT's shiny new 21CN network
i would run a few more from the DDS prompt and raise a fault if you still have a problem.

See www.ripe.net

Hi,

I am having the same problem and it really is frustrating as im sure you know all to well.
We are experiencing intermittant issues with our internet speed. I have a backup router on a seperate BT line and this too has the same issue.

Everytime I get BT to run a line test it comes back showing no speed issues. However if I ping 'www.google.co.uk' I can see that for a few minutes there is no problems and we get consistant times back and then for several minutes it takes 100-400ms and some time outs. This has been happening for a week or so now but is better some days than others.

I have run a cumulative trace route to bbc.co.uk for aprox 10 minutes and the results are as follows

to www.bbc.co.uk

HopIP min[ms] max[ms] ava.[ms] var.[ms] total loss
1 10.30.0.130 0 1 0 0
2 81.148.64.1 24 316 46 49 2
3 213.120.178.141 25 302 45 46
4 213.120.177.98 25 368 41 41
5 213.120.176.18 25 221 37 31 1
6 213.120.176.178 25 280 39 42 165
7 213.120.176.113 25 303 42 41
8 62.172.102.145 25 278 39 38
9 62.172.103.1 26 203 40 31
10 195.99.125.225 25 260 37 31
11 194.74.65.42 26 295 49 48 1
12 212.58.238.129 26 361 45 44
13 212.58.239.58 26 229 39 31
14 212.58.251.43 26 266 37 31
15 212.58.244.143 26 233 36 28 1
16 212.58.244.143 26 26 26

Is the total loss of 165 packets over 10 minutes a sign that there is a problem at 213.120.176.178?
where you able to resolve your issue or are you still experiencing this?

any help would be much apreciated.

regards
iain

It's good after the first 24 hours.

Well it's good within them as well, except the time axis only shifts every 2 hours but the graph progresses smoothly! Quite an amusing effect.

After 24 hours they stay in step.
