IP profile locked at 500?

[link to this post]

Since getting broadband I've only had a max link speed of 576/288, with the IP profile at 500. However, everywhere I've checked says that I should be able to get much more from my line. The Kitz ADSL checker says that I'm approx 2km from my local exchange and with my downstream attenuation I should be on a 6500 profile (dslMAX speed of 7840kbps).
I'm using a BT HomeHub 2 and it gives the following details regarding the ADSL line:

Downstream 576 Kbps
Upstream 288 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.1
Latency type Fast
Noise margin (Down/Up) 30.3 dB / 25.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 31.0 dB / 18.0 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 10.9 dBm / 11.4 dBm

A BT speedtest gives the following results:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 576 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 288 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 425 kbps

I'm on Broadband Option 3, so I was expecting much better speeds than this.
I called up the BT Broadband support and after doing all the checks they said that there was no issue with the line which they could see.
So is there any way of getting a faster connection? Or do I have to live with it until my exchange is switched over 21CN WBC (which I did make sure to ask about, but apparantly BT won't port people across by request). Or failing that, is there an ISP who would? My local exchange is http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/EACLN

Since your upload speed is 288kbs this means that you are on fixed 512kbs adsl and have never been upgraded to MaxDSL. You need to contact support and request to be moved to Max (they will probably insist on you taking out a new contract).

dsergeant is correct about your connection being a legacy fixed 512kb service.

I don't know if a change to ADSL Max would involve a new contract, but if it does you should seriously consider a change of ISP instead.

On that line I would suggest either TalkTalk or Vivaciti LLU Unlimited.

I think you are under-estimating your possible speed. On ADSL Max you should get the full 8Mbps connection speed, on vivaciti you could get possibly 16Mbps, and on Talktalk 8Mbps at the basic price or 14-16Mbps if you bought the Turbo Speed.

I had similiar stats to that on ADSL1 on fixed rate and I stuggle to get much above 5Mbit stable laugh and even taking those stability issues out of the equation I'd say hes looking at 7Mbit on MAX and 9-10Mbit on ADSL2+ realistically.

Seems you were right. I called up BT and got them to transfer the line across to DSLmax. No new contract needed or anything, just the normal spiel about the 10 day line stability testing. Haven't noticed any improvements in sync speed yet, but I'll give it a few days before worrying about it.
Thanks for the help.

In all sense you should get full speed ahead with MAX and double that with DSL2+ from the likes of 02 and TT e.t.c. Be careful however, as 2+ speeds are misleading. I was lead on to believe that my BB speeds would be well into the double figures, they won't be! I have the same stats as you.

The order wont even be through to Wholesale yet, could be up to 5 days before it's done depending on how slow wholesale are.

Yes, the problem being you are on the borked WBC system.

Hopefully the OP will be on IPStream or IPSC. I think everyone's ADSL2+ estimates in this thread were assuming the poster went to an LLU supplier - with ADSL2+ systems that work properly.
