Wildly fluctuating speeds - any ideas?

[link to this post]

Hi

Generally very unhappy with bt atm. Since 5th of may I have had nothing but hassle. It took best part of 6 weeks to find out why I couldn't connect to the internet at all (turned out they had terminated a mac code that I had requested instead of processing it!). Since then the speeds have been pathetic. I do have the higher level people looking at it but they can't seem to find out what the problem is. Basically the speeds will start off ok then eventually will drop RIGHT down and then I will be disconnected. Have had about 5 engineer call outs so far to both my house (resulting in 2 and a half days wasted from my holiday allowance at work), they say that there is nothing wrong with the line itself and have said there is no problem with the exchange (wimborne). Friday had a call saying that they had set the speed to 3968 and to monitor it. Friday evening it was great, back to normal. However this (saturday)morning no service had to reset router before connecting. Heres the speed logs that I've kept since 5:30 yesterday :-

Time 17:35
Downstream 3968
Upstream 448
IP Throughput 3500
Actual Throughput 2250

Time 20:45
Downstream 3968
Upstream 448
ip through put 3500
actual throughput 3226

Now the speed logs for today so far (when I could get the damn thing to load!)
Time 07:55
Downstream 2272
upstream 448
ip throughput 3000
aipt 384!!!!

Time 11:35
Downstream 1312
Upstream 448
IP through 2000
aipt 257

The throughput had fallen right away and the downstream has dropped.

Should be getting around 2 and a half meg.

This has been dragging on for weeks and I have had enough. Bt don't listen when I tell them I will be at work till after 5 in the evening and leave messages during the morning, can't seem to fix it. Any ideas what could be going on? I expect some variation in the downstream but not that much!

Cheers and sorry for long post!

Have you got a Sky box or a new'ish telephone? Or a phone-connected burglar alarm?

Have you tried an alternative router and have you tried a different filter?

Is the router plugged into the master socket, using just the short ADSL cable, or is it on a plug-in or wired phone extension?

Was there a similar problem caused you to request the MAC in the first place, or is the MAC irrelevant.

Got a sky box but not connected to phone line

Not got a phone connected burglar alarm

Router plugged wired into the filter, also had new face plate fitted by engineer.

Problem caused me to request mac in first place.

Cheers

Have a look at this FAQ.

Also is the ADSL cable well clear of the router power supply (probably incorporated into the plug), and any other power supply? Have you a DECT phone and how far away is the base station?
