For about the last 4 weeks, I've had problems with my connection dropping. No regular pattern, just an intermitent fault. Put up with it for about a week just in case it was a fault at the exchange and was being rectified.
Got fed up after the week had passed and it was getting worse. So, decided to ring BT's helpdesk, who advised me that they would look into it and ring me back. Which they duly did and told me that they'd 'done some work at the exchange'. Problem was still happening so I phoned them back to say so.
"Oh, it's a problem with your internal wiring sir". Now, this I know to be cobblers as I had the same problem in January and the nice man from BT came out and checked the one and only socket I have in the house and pronounced it fit as a fiddle. I pointed this out to call centre friend, who after about 15 minutes of trying to read from her script, decided to send somebody out to check it anway. I waited in for the morning and another nice man from BT came out, checked the socket, filter, external wiring, etc. and pronounced it fit as a fiddle. He then spent 45 minutes on the phone to India explaining this and updating their records....So they said, ok it's a problem at the Exchange, we'll send somebody to look.
Problem is still going on at this point so I ring them back and lo and behold, despite the fact that my records say that I've now had two engineers out this year who tell them that there is nothing wrong with the internal wiring, he then tells me he's going to send an engineer out to check my wiring and would I mind taking a day off work to wait in for this bloke who is going to have the easiest fault repair of the day.
So I did.
And he turned up, pronounced the wiring "fit as a fiddle" and said it must be a fault at the exchange.
At this point, I am beginning to seethe as the only reason I went with BT was to have a single supplier for both telephony and broadband.
But lo, the connection has been stable since then....and the reason? My speeds (which after 5pm are useless anyway) were worse than ever during the day.
Ran the speedtester and they've set my IP profile at 2500K.
My stats as below are:
Downstream 4,832 Kbps
Upstream 448 Kbps
ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.1
Latency type Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up) 15.4 dB / 16.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 10.0 dB / 8.0 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 15.7 dBm / 11.9 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local) 19
Loss of Signal (Local) 2
Loss of Power (Local) 0
FEC Errors (Down/Up) 28121 / 0
CRC Errors (Down/Up) 150 / 2147480000
HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 0
Error Seconds (Local) 57
So, am I expecting too much from BT (in it's various guises as OverReach, Global Services, Internet or whatever the next engineer to my house will have on the side of his van?) I live just under 500metres from the Exchange so would have thought that distance isn't a problem...??? The BT line checker tells me that I should be able to get 6.5mbs..... (hahaha).
Sorry for the rant but there are four people in my house, all of whom use the internet and would like it to be able to meet our needs rather than just be this shoddy excuse that BT appear to be serving up these days....
