Thinking of moving to BT

[link to this post]

I've been with VM ADSL for the past 5 years but just at the moment I'm getting Atrocious service from them, despite good stats of -
Downstream
connection = 7936 to 8128
Attenuation = 39
Noise = 6
Upstream
connection = 448
Attenuation = 12
Noise = 27
My download speed on BT speedtester is 287kbps to 450kbps during peak times and 911kbps off peak.
According to the BT website ,I should be able to get 10mg speed.
If I move to BT Talk and Surf Plus, I'll save £3.99 a month which will help offset any cancelation fee imposed by VM.

What is the opinion of excisting BT users, what sort of service do they offer ?
and would I be able to use my own router? at the moment I have a Netgear 834g conected by ethernet cable with the wireless disabled.
Ta,
Del.

When I left BT the service was ok, it was all down to cost. I went with Tiscalli (2.1/2 yrs ago big mistake that was)

If the home hub is free then try it, it was good then supposed to be better now.

There is nothing to stop you using your own AFAIK, when my hub got damaged I bought Edimax to replace it.

I have VM cable and had loads of problems though seems sorted now (last 3-4weeks) so I had the BT line reinstalled.

With Plusnet for B/B as standbye get 6.3meg most times, was cheaper option(£40) if I wanted to get out of contract early.

Only 10 day notice now too

Thanks,
Am I right in thinking that I obtain my code code,give it to the new supplier and they give me a transfer date. Who cancels the old supplier, does the new supplier automatically do it or do I contact VM to cancel it after the change ?

ta,
Del.

Well, I've moved to BT, signed up for the "Talk and Surf Plus package" so I'm saving about 4 quid a month, I hope I'll get faster speeds than I had with VM, BT reckon I'll get 10mg, we'll see.

Do I need my new BT email address to set up the Home Hub ? I wrote it down but somebody who will remain nameless has spilt hot chocolate on it.

The hub is already set up, no need to put any username or password in it.

The only thing you need to do if you use the wireless part is to enter the key into your computer.

You will need your new BT address so Bt can send you propaganda, I mean information about all their other fantastic services.

I set mine up so it forwards the info to my normal email address.

Desktop machine now powered by windows 7 pro 64 bit, laptop by ubuntu

Hi zyborg47,
That's OK then, I want to try and set up the hub manually if I can,so I don't get a load of BT junk on my laptop, I think the wep key is on the hub label isn't it ?
At the moment I'm using my Netgear 834G with the wireless switched off and connected via ethernet cable, is it possible to switch the wireless off on the BT hub ?

The Wireless key is on a little card (credit card size thing) too that you get with the hub.
Although you can always change the key.. and the network name if you want.

You can also switch off the wireless if you want.
