VDSL modem with existing router

Hello - I'm getting fibre internet with Eclipse next week.
I am going to have a new vdsl modem but I don;t fully understand if I can keep using my existing ADSL wireless router as a simple router (i.e. nt managing my internet connection) simply plugging my new vdsl router into the router to share internet access with all my machines. I had this working with my ADSL connection (i.e. ADSL2 modem connected to Wireless ADSL router). Anyone knows for sure?

The BT/Eclipse-supplied VDSL box is just a VDSL modem, not a router, so you should be fine.

is your current thing a router on its own ? ie you plug it's ethernet WAN port into an ADSL modem ? if so, it isn't a "ADSL wireless router" but just a "wireless router" and it'll work fine.

If it's an ADSL modem/router where you plug the phone line in to it then it won't work in its standard configuration.

Yeah, basically if it has an RJ-11 port (for a phone line) it wont work.

You need one that can do PPPoE with an ethernet (RJ-45) WAN port, existing ADSL routers have an RJ-11 WAN port and won't work.

If you could tell us which model your existing router is, we could tell you if it will work or not.

I have a DLINK DGL-4300. I basically use it as a switch. I plug my adsl modem in one of the ethernet ports. I'm hoping I can do the same with my vdsl modem.

That will work fine with a modem yes

Just make sure you plug the new modem into the WAN port of your Dlink and not one of its 4 LAN ports

So how should I setup the router so that it understand what it is getting from the WAN port? I mean the network authentication will be done by the modem right os not sure I understand how wit will work.

I'm not sure what you've done to the router to make it work as it is now, maybe turned off DHCP and NAT? I dunno

When it comes to connecting to the new modem I would reset the router to factory defaults. As for authentication I'm not sure how it works with your ISP I would assume if you have to enter a username/password you will put that into the router.
