Ping suddenly become much higher.

Been using BT broadband for around 5 years now with no problems (well, 1 problem that required power cycling the modem!). Today I've had one complete service down (fixed by resetting the modem - I think) and my ping in games has gone from ~40-50 right up to ~200. Doing a tracert I get this:

Are the first two hops local? After that it seems the pings are really high across all hops. Is that right? Is there a general service problem today or is my modem going tits-up?

That is at your exchange or close by ... but try a full reboot of your PC and router. If it is still there, a call to your ISP (BT Residential or Business) is needed - with the evidence.

What does the tbb ping test to you look like?

Have just tried www.google.com and the final server IP address you reached and get 11ms and 25ms

Bit [censored] actually. Much worse than it usually is. Played with MS Network Monitor to see what's going on and there's no other activity (HTTP or DNS).

Actually using MS Network Monitor there's a constant stream of TCP chat between 4.26.236.126 and 192.168.1.2. No clue what they are. With nothing running network utilization in task manager is around 3% (100MBs). I don't know if that's relevant either...

If that is the case you have a constant 3Mbps connection - what is your sync rate or IP profile?

I've no idea how to get that....?

Also, the TCP traffic I was getting from the previously mentioned address has stopped and my utilization is now 0%. I have no clue what that was all about. IP lookup shows it was an address in the US (!).

The IP address you has was part of the block 4.0.0.0 to 4.255.255.255 allocated to Level3 Comms - a large US conglomerate. Why you would be streaming from there who knows but they do provide hosting and management services.

Now that has gone you seem to be back to normal.
