2Wire router works, Netgear doesn't

Hello,
we're on BT Business broadband, which came with a BT2700HGV router. We've had to replace that (for various reasons) with a bog-standard new Netgear DG834. I've used this router once on another line (IDnet broadband) and it worked fine. However, I can't get it to work on the BT line.

The Netgear's Setup Wizard never completes, and manually entering the username and password only gets me:

Sat, 2000-01-01 23:58:52 - Initialize LCP.
Sat, 2000-01-01 23:58:52 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Sat, 2000-01-01 23:58:55 - CHAP authentication failed
Sat, 2000-01-01 23:58:55 - LCP down.

However, I do get an IP when using the test username bt_test@startup_domain. I've noted that the DSL speed is much lower again than on the 2Wire (4900 kbps). The Netgear's statistics say this:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4947 kbps 1055 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 25.6 db
Noise Margin 8.9 db 6.0 db

I've tried using the BT's as well as the Netgear's bundled microfilter. Any other ideas? Thanks.

What username and password are you putting into the Netgear?

Means you got the wrong credentials. Try Username = [email protected] and no pwd.

Never bother with setup wizards.

Well, the DSL username and password copied and pasted from that welcome email.

The username is C*****@HG28.btclick.com, the password is 12 characters, upper and lower case alphanumerical.

Try again, this time make the 'HG' bit C*****@hg28.btclick.com in lower case, not upper.

Yes, would be OK if the OP were a BT Broadband customer, not a BT Business Broadband one !

No harm in trying, when you don't know the solution!

I think it came set as 192.168.1.1
Could that be the problem?

I've heard that I may have to spoof the MAC address of the router. Is that possible here?

Netgear router's come as 192.168.0.* as the local network.

Doubt you need to spoof the MAC address .

THe 192.1.8.x.x address is purely internal, so you don't need to worry about that unless you have a specific need to have 192.168.0.x addresses, eg, you have lots of fixed IP addresses already that would be a pain to change.

BT don't use the mac address of the router for authentication - about the only UK outfit I can think of where that would be required is Virgin Media's cable network.

The key message is the CHAP authentication failure, ie wrong username\password.

Incredible. This did the trick. Why then did that login name/password combination work on those other two routers?

Great! "Why?" is a different issue . Maybe you are not on BT Business?
