Query re Openreach FTTC Modem - One for Zarjaz?

What is the best way of disconnecting an Openreach FTTC modem please?

With ADSLmax, whichever way I do it - switching off on my DrayTek, switching off at mains socket; my BRAS always seems to suffer. Even requesting a reboot from the DrayTek control panel has upset it.

So just wondering the best way for switching off the OR modem - if there is one?

Not sure if this helps or not - but I've switched mine off couple of times by pulling the mains plug out as I wanted the socket for something else temporarily - and each time I've plugged it back in my IP profile has returned to the 38717 it has always been.

I've unplugged the Modem to change over mains plugs on a 4-way distribution socket.

Also have had a few mains outages of upto an hour.

Didn't notice any speed degredation at all once the Modem was powered up again.

I have power cycled mine a few times - primarily to see if I can get back to the full sync! But each time I try the sycn comes back very close to where it was before power cycling.

1. Remove power connector
2. Remove line
3. Remove Ethernet connection to router

4. Wait a minute (or longer)

5. Reinsert power connector
6. Wait about 30 seconds until LED stops flashing (reboots itself with no incoming VDSL)
7. Reconnect phone line
8. Wait until DSL light stops flashing
9. Reconnect Ethernet


The reason for that is it allows the modem to be fully operational before connecting the line - and same with Ethernet. Just old fashioned practice - although modem systems can probably cope, I was taught to let one stabilise before connecting the next.

Using this on my FTTC and other ADSL connections has never resulted in any significant degradation/reduction in sync speed.

Interesting sequence there. I well remember having to keep to a tried and tested sequence when I was using either a GSM phone or a INMARSAT-A terminal for access to the C&W Easylink service using my Win95 laptop; luckily I used a DOS based program and it was text characters only, which made for a shorter/cheaper transmission.

Recently found that on rebooting my DrayTek V2800 that it would not let access the user interface on http://192.168.1.1 unless it was connected to the phone line, odd to say the least.

Used your steps and the profile on BT speedtester went up to 23317 from 23179

In other words I gained 0.5%

Sorry Clive, only just spotted this thread, it's almost as if it has my name on it !!!

I'm with MHC, disconnect the router, then power down the VDSL modem. In reverse, let the modem sync up before reconnecting the router.

I must admit, it seems not to have any detrimental effect on my circuit however I do it. I do tend to leave it on 24/7 as a rule.

I hope to go FTTC end of September subject to Hawarden being ready. Although I will be going with A&A I thought best to ask here since BT Infinity seems to be the best known product and of course the kit is identical.

Now if I could only fathom out why OR have spent resources marking up the location of their cable ducts (paint marks on pavement). The fibre between cabinets does not pass this way, so cannot be for that. I'm hoping that OR are either going to fit a brand new cabinet + FTTC cab, or FTTP like at Chester South - the next exchange area to the east from Hawarden. However I think both of those wishes are unlikely

But you did not lose anything! And that was the point ... not to gain but to stop significant losses.

I live on Overlea Drive CH5 3HS (CH5 3HR being the other side of the road).

The cabinet which I have been told that I am on is on Braeside Avenue (CH5 3HW) at its junction with Fieldside, with its associated FTTC on Fieldside (CH5 3JB).

The only other cabinet which could possibly serve my house is at the Junction of Park Avenue (CH5 3HY) and Gladstone Way A550. The route of the fibre and other main Openreach cables is along the A550.

Both these cabs are on the OR spreadsheet and would appear that 100% of lines could have FTTC service.

My query is why OR have been marking up on the pavements the routes of existing cable ducts. This area is virtually 100% connected to OR pairs, mostly overhead to the pole, thence underground.

So, the only reasons I can think of for marking up existing cable ducts are, a) existing old aluminium cable to be replaced with copper; a new cabinet seeing that some properties would be 700 metres from either of the other two; c) FTTP although that not listed on the OR spreadsheet. Otherwise seems a waste of effort.

Well I don't know cabinet locations, but cabinets 2 and 15 cover 100% of the lines for that post code. No FTTP anywhere, just FTTC.

But as has been noted, that's the April spreadsheet and there is a later one.

Are you sure putting your street name and postcode into a public forum (especially given your name is listed in your profile) is a good idea?

I did consider that before I did, however since my name is already known and I have previously stated that I am a County Councillor, then since more detail is readily available my post code is the least of my worries, as you can see on Google.

I am more concerned with buying over the telephone, who knows what details are noted down. Indeed, my wife on one occasion had one of her plastic cards "used" even though she had only used it twice, in person, locally. (LTSB routinely change card numbers on each renewal).

Originally I had 27.7Mbit from the tester the engineer had so I've gradually been bleeding away megabits over the last year and a bit. Every 0.5% helps

Oh I don't know; there are a few nutters around!

.. more likely that some other utilities contractors are going to be digging up round your way, so have called in the Plant Protection Officer to mark up where the lines go, before they horse through them whilst digging.

As Zar has said. Someone is going to be digging up the road and has had plant marked up in order to avoid cutting anything expensive.

Well that takes all the fun out of it.
They wouldn't be utility companies if OR didn't cut through a gas pipe, then Transco didn't cut through a water pipe (repairing their gas mains), then the water company didn't cut through an electricity cable (repairing their pipes) only to result in the electricity company cutting a phone cable.....(repeat).
