BT 21CN WBC pings?

Hi guys,

A year ago I was with BT Broadband ADSL MAX and my download speed was about 6.5meg and my ping was a pretty consistant 45-50ms. Then my exchange had TalkTalk LLU added, so decided to change to them for better speeds and ping. Currently with TalkTalk I get about 12meg download and ping is around 35ms. Now my exchange is being upgraded to 21CN WBC, and i'm seriously considering changing back to BT broadband, I have already been quoted at getting around 12meg download speed with them, but i'm wondering will the ping go back up, or should it stay roughly the same as LLU pings... or god forbid 21CN WBC pings may be even better than LLU!???

Any help is much appreciated.

Ping to where?

My ping to bbc.co.uk on WBC is 11ms on FastPath or 23ms on Interleaved.

From where is important too once you start talking about latencies below 20ms. Latency measures to servers hosted in London (or elsewhere accessed via peering links in London) are going to be lower if you are in London compared to if you are in Glasgow. At the speed of light in vacuum the ~1,200 km round trip will add about 4ms.

If the fibre takes a long route for geographical or network design reasons (IIRC some years ago parts of North Yorkshire apparently had their traffic flow through Manchester on the way south, for instance) then you can add a bit more to that 4ms, and a bit more again for each bit of equipment the signal passes through if it doesn't go all the way on a single unbroken fibre.

Interleaving on the copper transit over the "last mile" makes more of a difference then the travel time down the network's backbone fibres though, as your results show.

Sorry for the confusion.

The ping test I'm doing is from pingtest.net to the Maidenhead and Milton Keynes servers. When I was with BT ADSL MAX is was around 45-50ms pings, then when I changed to TalkTalk LLU, the ping has went down to 35ms to the same two servers. What I was wondering is if I change to BT's 21CN WBC ADSL2+ broadband, will the ping remain like it is on LLU, or will it go back up, like it was when on ADSL MAX?

Also I live in the north of Scotland, so would imagine that my ping should be a little higher than most living in England?

In that case Pingtest.Net to Maidenhead = 20 ms on WBC FastPath.

But, as you can see, not as accurate as a pukka PING!

EDIT: But getting back to your original Q, changing your ISP/Platform can very well alter your path/peering and therefore your latency.

I'm not the OP but just wanted to say thanks for posting this!

I see so few Infinity traceroutes from people based in London, so this helps to decide what sort of impact switching from Be (with my current 5-6ms to bbc.co.uk) will have. Looks like it's fairly negligible.
