Infininty slowed to a crawl today ...

Hi all,

Hello, my Infinity has been great for most of the time since November.

Generally 37/8 megs on ethernet and 20/6 megs over wireless.

Today it's awful. Ethernet test showed download at 8 megs and upload at 7.97 megs on the BT tester.

IP Profile is still 38.71

The beta tester shows around 4-5 megs

Speedtest.net shows 4.05 megs up and 6.25 megs down.

And TBB is 3873 Kbps down and 4538 Kbps up

Any ideas? Absolutely nothing has changed here. This is silly.

Is there a problem out there in BT land, again?

Re-booted the HH3 and all seems well again, just a slightly different IP dished out.

The IP Profile is calculated from sync speed.
Usually IP Profile is 96.79% of sync speed.

The problem is that quite often the HG612 modem can re-sync "on the fly".
These "on the fly" re-syncs do not always result in a new PPP session as they are too quick.
(around 16 seconds or so on my connection).

The way to force a new PPP session is to disconnect/reconnect the router or hub, or a full disconnect/reconnect of the modem (this second option is detected - sometimes negatively- by DLM at the cabinet DSLAM).

So if speeds appear low, yet the IP Profile is still high, a new PPP session will update the IP Profile accordingly.

How can you tell that the modem has re-synced?

With an unlocked modem, the current sync rate can be seen in the modem's GUI, the ongoing graphs will show steps in the sync rate & connected time, the modem's internal log will show :-

2012-2-28 19:23:30 Notice 104500 DSL activate succeed
2012-2-28 19:23:14 Notice 104500 DSL deactivate

& the harvested data log(s) will show connected time in seconds & current sync speeds etc..........

With a locked modem, I suppose the first indication will be a change in achievable download/upload speeds.

Again, I think the only way to be sure with a locked modem is to disconnect/reconnect the router to obtain the true current IP Profile.

Has this happened again since you last posted?

Only reason I ask is that after my initial teething problems with Infinity (which we've discussed in the past), my connection was running fine until I rebooted everything a few days ago. Ever since that reboot, I've found that the BT HH3 needs rebooting every day!

Each day I connect, speedtest shows 800k (!) download speed, and 1Mb upload. If I reboot the HH3, it's back up to 35Mb/6.5Mb, which is fine.

Just wondered if yours has settled down now? I've spoken to BT's Support in India yesterday and they are calling me back for a status update later today. Just seems strange that since I powered everything down a few days ago I now have to reboot the HH3 every day in order to get the performance back.

Anyone else faced this problem?

I have to re-boot the HH3 on a regular basis. My speed drops to 4-8 megs - a reboot generally cures it.

I just suspect that all the ISP's are trying to get their networks to work properly so they can use the iPlayers etc for the Olympics - not that I care much being up in the frozen North.And ... they are upsetting lots of bits of routing, which is notorious to isolate and then fix and then propagate out to all the other routers which need to know the new updated paths etc ...

Strange that lots of issues seem to be wth iPlayer and bbc site in general Or at least fast routes to the Beeb!

Anyway, the bottom line seems to be, re-boot HH3 regularly -
