Infinity with no cabinet?

[link to this post]

I'm getting conflicting information on this, but if anyone can confirm this one way or the other I would really appreciate it. Does having no green cabinets in the street (underground dp's only) mean I will not be getting the option of Infinity when my exchange (Barrhead) gets upgraded at the end of the year?

An Openreach engineer had previously confirmed my fears that we wouldn't receive it due to the lack of cabinets, then a lot of work was carried out at the dp's with new covers etc. and another guy said "it depends" but he couldn't be more specific.

All lines are fed direct from the exchange. Current thinking is that your only chance may be FTTP some time in the future. I doubt if there will be any difference in the April data.

Have had recent talk about Exchange only lines in the future (think 2013 or later) getting new cabinets for FTTC or FTTP

What will happen will vary from area to area, and may depend on BDUK investment levels too

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm guessing it's just my area that has direct lines then if there is a setup date for FTTC at the exchange? How do you tell if it's a direct line? I was pinning all my hopes on this as we have aluminium lines and over the past few years I have had 4 periods of extended instability frown Last year it took nearly 3 months to track down water in a connection.

I suppose I should be thankful I'm getting 2Mbps... I know there are plenty of people worse off.

http://www.coolwebhome.co.uk/fibre/checker.php should shout about exchange only lines if you plug your post code in, and the area has been looked at with regards to fibre roll-outs

My sources tell me that e0 areas will only be provided with BDUK money. Not sure about e1,e2 etc areas.

That checker has stopped working for me Andrew. I sent you a PM at 12:41 with the error details.

Uh uh! Failing in IE9. Just tried Opera and no problem.
But a second go in Opera falls over.

I know this post is a good few years old now but having moved to the same postcode as moola over a year ago and living with 2Mb connection after coming from a full speed fibre connection it has been a [censored] nightmare.

Wife wanted to move here, I was put off by the lack of any decent ADSL connection and no fibre. Guess who won in the end.

Anyhoo I was wondering if there is anyone on the forums who knows any more details on whether our lines will ever get a cabinet installed for fibre? Or if it will just go down as "not commercially viable" by Openreach?

Below shows exchange as infill?

http://www.btplc.com/news/Articles/ShowArticle.cfm?A...

And Digital Scotland where and when site has the following info

You are connected to Glasgow Barrhead via an 'EO (Exchange Only) line'. This means your line is connected directly to the exchange.

Barrhead

Fibre broadband is currently available to some premises in this area.

Digital Scotland plans to extend fibre broadband coverage in this area. Work under the Digital Scotland programme means that additional premises in this area are currently expected to receive fibre broadband by the end of June 2015. Service availability is subject to available service provider product offerings and can be affected by technology constraints specific to individual circumstances.

Any extra info greatly appreciated

This link might have some useful info and pointers as to what you can do.

But, if your line goes directly in to the exchange rather than through a street cabinet then unfortunately you won't be able to get BT Infinity.

Digital Scotland is doing some cabinets, but others and most EO have no current plans.

Without a postcode it is hard to say much more, particularly an exchange that covers over 1,300 postcodes.

In my town in Somerset a few of us close to the exchange were EO lines.

To my surprise when Connect Devon and Somerset started the upgrades a new "ordinary" cabinet was installed on the pavement outside the exchange soon followed by a "fibre" cabinet close by. We were then shifted to the cabinet from the exchange and fibre was available to those who wanted it.

Good to know it's happening as it is common sense and a quick solution.

Might not have to worry about waiting for Openreach to install cabinets for the EO lines after all.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/6840-4-million-ex...

Received email update from Virgin the other day.

"Thanks for registering G53 7XU with Cable My Street.

Were getting in touch with the great news that your area is part of our expansion plans!

Were still working through plans and timings but to make sure your area is one of the first to get connected, tell your friends and neighbours to register their interest too. Its all about people power you see. We want to expand into areas with the most demand for our services first.

When we get to an area, its our aim to connect everyone. Very occasionally we come up against local factors meaning we might not be able to connect all homes. But we always try to do our best.

Here at Virgin Media were proud to say our fibre broadband (up to 152Mb) is twice as fast as Skys top speed (up to 76Mb), bringing you the UKs best widely available broadband for streaming.*

Well be in contact with you as soon as were ready to start connecting up your area. In the meantime, if you have any questions, check out our FAQs.

Kind Regards
The Virgin Media team"

We had the exact type of message from Virgin Media.

I was told on the phone back in October 2014 that we was part of the 200,000 east London rollout project that they have not long started and that we would see some cabinets being installed over the next few weeks.

November came still no cabinets so I phones them again, they was very apologetic on the phone and said that they couldn't provide a service due to not being in our area and that they needed to survey of my area and also confirmed that we will be done along with the rest of our area as part as the same project.

December, January, February, March and April all the same as above, where they promised that we are to be done along with the rest of our area, I told them that I am aware that they cannot provide any service in our area due to there is no cabinets installed yet, which that they agreed and that they would need to send a engineer to survey our area.

I then phoned them back the start of May where I was told the same line as before that they are unable to provide any service at this time, I refused to accept that and asked to be put onto their manager and then onto their manager where I was told that we are not down to get their fibre service, so now we are 1 of several roads in our borough that is unable to get their fibre service even though for several months we was promised and also confirmed that we would be getting it.

I then asked them in in the near future would we be provided their fibre where I was told not in the next 5 to 7 years of their schedule.

So I just said forget it along with a few other words.

The excuse that they gave me when I enquired about service was "your garden is too long". My neighbour has a cable connection - although he may no longer use it and there is an 80mm diameter green plastic access point on the shared boundary line! So even though it is in the street they could not be bothered with a connection to me.
