BT Infinity tomorrow - Comparing Speeds

[link to this post]

At the moment I am with o2 and this is my speed http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1...

The OR Engineer comes tomorrow to install BT Infinity. I just wanted to compare speeds. So tomorrow night I shall post my new speeds. They have said I should get 23.5 down and 5.6 up. Cannot wait to see what I get.

Be aware that what you get may change considerably during line training

Hi, yea I've been warned that there is a ten day settling in period and speeds could change. Installed this afternoon and this is it so far http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1...

I am happy so far with that.

Hi

Have you tried different speed test sites? I was estimated 35Mbps down and got it installed today and thinkbb rates me at the moment as :-

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1...

But on speedtest.net I get http://www.speedtest.net/result/2353546642.png

And that can vary from server to server.

For downstream believe the TBB result, for upstream the speedtest.net is probably nearer!

For TBB don't use the Java test, use the Flash one, its accurate for me every time. (Speedtest.net seems to vary dramatically).

(Standard advice to not use any speed test over a wireless connection).

I have found the most reliable test for upload to be http://myspeed.visualware.com/index.php . Recently, their download estimates have been terrible. The BT retail tester gives the worst upload estimates; under certain conditions I was getting around 3Mbps from it, when visualware or real uploads (ftp to SquirrelSave) were at 17Mbps.

I was getting strange messages from that site regarding "your trial is over please purchase" - so stopped using.

Odd. I used to use the same test at a different address; which had a more convenient entry direct to the test but stopped working. The error might have been 'trial expired', I can't remember. It was around the time of that change that I also found it started giving very low download estimates. But I haven't had any problems actually getting the new one to run.

With the new address: I initially see a map of the world, click on the UK and get a map of UK, and click on Maidenhead (usually, better results for me than London). That then gets me to the test page where I click on 'Click to start test'. With the old address, I went straight to the page with 'Click to start test'.

on tbb flash test I get right now 6.30pm

71.59 down
16.3up

this is with max sync and ip profiles. so there is overheads as well compared to throughput.

Thanks, I've just tried it - I'm interested that one of the tests has slow upload, and the other is fine, and its also coded in Java (as is the main tbb test). The HTTP test gives 45mbps download and 4mbps upload, and the Socket test gives 37mbps download and 8.9mbps upload. My sync speeds on the Huawei are 48945kbps / 10497kbps. (I ignored the gauge display).

Thinkbroadband flash test shows 45mbps download and 8.9 upload - but at this time of night I'm showing a lot of contention effects on the BT Infinity network (which I never saw with BE) that swing my speeds as slow at 29meg and as high as 45meg; the TBB flash tester is the ONLY one with a decent graph. Would be useful to have a graph on upload.

I'm seeing 19.4/17.0 down/up from the London site and 36/16.6 from the Maidenhead site on Visualware. 60.8/16.25 from TBB flash test, 56.2/16.3 from TBB old (Java?) tester. 64.8/15.5 on speedtest.net. All close enough not to worry apart from the visualware download tests.

modem speeds:
Max: Upstream rate = 24032 Kbps, Downstream rate = 85740 Kbps
Path: 0, Upstream rate = 20000 Kbps, Downstream rate = 74146 Kbps

I used to do quite a few tests when my connection was dodgy (extension from junction box before master socket), and while DLM was recovering from that fault. I hardly ever do any now except when discussing of forums; connection has just been behaving (fingers crossed).

Well the ten day training period is up. Speeds have varied over the ten days when I checked. Highest download 25.8 lowest 18.6. Few days it seemed to settle on 23.7 the promised speed.

This is it this morning at 9.40 a.m. I did a speed test at 9.30 and it showed 21.6 its dropped in ten minutes. Re-estimated the distance to the box and think its nearer half a mile. Would welcome your comment. Do you think the speed will vary all the time.

do a test here and click on the extra diagnostics also to get your line profile.

http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/

My 2 theories are either your line isnt stable and your sync speed is varying, possible since your line is been pushed to its limit, or BT in your area has some congestion.

With that said tho a lowest speed of 18mbit is still ok and shouldnt cause you issues on any mainstream type activities.

seems bit faster than speedtest.net on upload but slower on download

rates me at 72.1 down
18.6 upload
88% consistency

BT speedtest showed 24.15 down and 4.57 up with Ping of 34.13. However within two minutes I did a tbb speed test and, wait for it, it read 4.7 down and 3.1 up. The BT diagnostic said no problem indicated.

Who do you believe?

PS I am happy with my speeds, much better that two weeks ago.

well for a start dont run tbb java speed test.

speedtest.net london namesco server is better or use tbb flash tester thats better than the java tester.
