High pings after 7pm

[link to this post]

Dont know if this is related to the packet loss thread if so then you can just close this and I will post there but for around 3 weeks I have noticed that my ping to some UK gaming servers has increases from 20 to 170 after 7pm then goes back to normal after around 11pm. Some web pages are also slow to load.

This is my trace route to the bbc.

The graph is fine, though look on the BT Infinity board there are many users reporting the same issue (congestion).

Yeah I had a quick look and found a post regarding high pings but I find that forum hard to keep up with as so many people are posting to complain about this and that, the TBB BQM does not show the high ping but I did start a f8lure graph at 10.30pm and that shows the increase in ping then tailing off again towards 11pm.

Will post a full graph tomorrow night once I got some good data, but all I do know is this has got much worse since BT removed the peak time throttling before I would see high pings maybe once every other month now its every day at the same time.

All the "We will never slow you down" we hear lately, should be followed with 'We will leave you to slow each other'!

The difference between genius and stupidity is; genius has its limits.

Yeah, I posted over there as well but will also post here to get as much exposure seeing as BT are burying their head in the sand.

And a link to my live graph http://f8lure.mouselike.org/index.asp?DoAction=ViewH...

Ignore the wall of red, thatís just when I turn my computer off.

Also sent them a message on twitter but I don't hold out much hope in this being resolved any time soon.

Online gaming is hopeless now in the evening. Just tried to play Halo 4, completely unplayable.

Back when BT were rolling out 21CN I seem to recall them making much of the ability to prioritize traffic of different types. Did anything come of that, or is a free for all the best we can expect?

It seems from the BT forum (mentioned a couple of times above) that the issue is particular bad in the south-west; though not limited to it.

I was getting about 120-140ms to froschroom.com (UK based) last night in game (QuakeWorld), but pinging the IP directly was coming back at around 19ms.

Very very weird.

Fortunately QW has a bunch of proxies available so I was able to reroute via mattlantis.net (also UK based) and had a stable 19ms.

FWIW I'm in SW London but get routed via Sheffield.

Are you sure both were the same device? They might be fronting the servers with something that responds quickly to a ping whereas the back end servers themselves are loaded with the game traffic.

It may also be that a ping and a response time are very different things. The latency in game could be measuring a number of other factors as well and using a completely different protocol (and could be the game protocol is being shaped whereas pings are not).

99% sure it's the same device - think it's hosted on a VPS at lcn.com.

Using the mattlantis.net proxy gave me a stable 19ms in game to froschroom which suggests it's not a froschroom related issue and is instead some BT weirdness.

Protocol would have involved about 77 udp packets per second on port 27501 - so yeah, different to a ping.

In a windows tracert I was getting around 130ms on the penultimate hop, but the final one was 19ms. If it happens again tonight I'll try a UDP traceroute and see if that makes any difference.

Tracert is of limited benefit as it just tells you the priority something gives to ping responses rather than the actual time. The only hop that matters is the last one in this case and that is giving you the same response as ping (as would be expected).

As I said before it is either shaping/prioritisation of the particular protocol or it is the fact that the servers take longer to return a response. The fact that the latency for the game is going to be based on what the server is doing and therefore measures the actual servers latency on dealing with the packet rather than just the latency involved in returning a ping could account for the difference.

I would also strongly suspect they have multiple back end servers being serviced by a load balancer. Or that there are front end servers for "presentation" and back end servers doing the application work. In either case it would be the front end/load balancer that responds to a ping but the back and app servers actually doing the work for the game.

The ping shows your raw latency to the server. The game shows the amount of time it takes for your packet to get from you to the server, to be processed by the server and then for it to be sent back. Do you know peope on the game with other ISPs that can compare their ping latency with the latency reported by the game at the times you are talking about? It could just be a busy time for the game.

Assuming though that others latency in game is fine then it could very easily be prioritisation by the ISP on that port/protocol. Then it would be interesting to see if you can find any other BT customers that can compare latency.
