BT changing mail supplier from Yahoo! to Critical Path

In reference to community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/Changes-to-BT-s-portal-and-ema...:

During the summer the BT Yahoo! portal will close, but existing customers will still be able to access their BT Yahoo! Mail account by clicking on a link from BT.com. Later in the year, existing customers will be moved to BT Mail. Your inbox, including all your folders, will be moved over and you will keep the same email address, although you may be prompted to change your password.



BT has chosen a company called Critical Path to provide the BT Mail new email service.



We will be contacting all of our BT Yahoo! customers in the coming months to tell you what to expect before your email is switched to the new service.

Well done BT, they've recognised that Yahoo Mail is one big security hole and have bailed out.

Unlucky Sky Yahoo customers I guess.

If it is Critical Path Inc http://www.cp.net then it will certainly be an improvement in terms of security and not having all the adverts and associated junk.

Just moved to BT but made sure that all my email (apart from the welcome to BT one) bypasses Yahoo completely.

BT can choose to integrate adverts if they want to though.

The only good thing about the Yahoo deal was the free "Flickr Pro" but after Flickr's big redesign "pro" doesn't exist anymore, so nothing lost there either.

I never used my BT email as I had a BT.com login on my domain email long ago (for phone line) so when I signed up for Infinity they kept using it for correspondence. Happy coincidence - I only used the BT/Yahoo login for Flickr and for BTWiFi.

Why dont they just host email internally? thats what they used to do years ago.

If I want a yahoo account I would use one directly, and it doesnt have the disadvantages such as losing the account when cancelling the broadband.

Yes, Sky recently moved their mail to Yahoo.

Actually Sky in the early days used Pipex to host the Sky.com domain for the early customers and when TT bought Pipex we were all moved to GMail and were told it was so much better than Pipex and it would be for the better.

I didn't bother I bought my 2 domains in 2006 and have used them on paid for mail packages since then.

To be honest I would happily not be issued with ISP email service and get a better price that I could use to pay for my professional mail service.

with sky and talktalk (possibly other ISPs now) you dont lose your email anymore if you leave them because its hosted via gmail or yahoo etc you can keep it,

BE did this, and one of many reasons I was a BE customer. I would still be apart from the fact they were bought by Telefonica (O2) and didn't do Fibre.

It was 5 or 6 years or so when BT moved - maybe more.

Yahoo offered BT a "great deal" to host all BTs consumer mail accounts which was significantly less than BTs own costs - to the accountants it was an easy choice, although there were many in BT who wanted to fight the move and keep the service in-house for several reasons including that it would offer customers a better solution.

Totally agree, I have my own domain names which I only use for email, I think ISPs should stop giving "free" email and concentrate on giving out fixed IPs to those who need them.

If anyone wants a free email address they can use either Google or Yahoo

I agree, but the ISPs do it as a 'lock in' tactic. Only Sky so far let you keep your @sky.com address for free if you leave them.

The BT email hosted by Yahoo provides access via the Yahoo portal (or a variant of it) to webmail for BT email customers but many of them have no clue it even exists as they just use it via POP3. POP3 hardly fits in with Yahoo's business model, which might be why it was so flaky.

I completely missed O2 which I did know about before, but I really had no idea PlusNet bothered with email and let you keep it after you cancelled.

BT Business (@btconnect.com) addresses apparently were not deleted when people left, and NTL managed to forget to delete many email accounts too - but I think they were mistakes.

I have an old Plusnet email, which I still use at times. I seem to remember, when migrating away, that you had to request a change of account to dial-up to keep the email active.

But not the disposable email addresses. I have hundreds of those, one for every company or website I deal with, so I know who has leaked my email address to hackers or spammers (surprisingly few apart from Symantec, ironically).

I'm not happy about having to change all of those.

Get your own domain, then you can have all the disposable addresses you want and no issues if your ISP changes things, or you change ISPs.

Thanks, I have a domain for my personal email address which I don't give to any companies but my registrar only allows 40 addresses per domain plus a catch-all which I disabled to cut down on spam. Looks like I need to find a better registrar.

Or get the domain's MX pointed to another company that handles email, or if you're upto it your own VPS server.

Change to Tsohost, link in my sig. Get a year added on to your domain for free as well! Then £6.70 per two years. Web/mail hosting is £14.99pa with 10 mailboxes and unlimited aliases.

no just find a host for the domain.

It seems you are also using your registrar as a host. So dont confuse the 2 things.

If you find a host that has no such limits, then have your registrar just forward dns lookups to the host.

Thanks, yes I was using my registrar joker.com as a no-frills host for email and url forwarding.

In the end I signed up for tsohost Lite Hosting as recommended here, which should be enough for my 2 domains. A quick update of the nameservers at joker and it was all up & running.
