Just had BT Infinity 1 installed yesterday....

[link to this post]

Good morning.
As per per the title above. Had the Openreach engineer connect it all up Saturday morning. Just before he left he did a speedtest and it came back at 18.81mb download. I did one more test later in the morning at it was about the same. I know about the 10 day stabilisation time etc and how it can fluctuate and I have read about the IP profile on here.

I had to plug in a 4 way extension lead later in the day and therefore unplug the router and white modem a couple of times.

I have done the BTW speedtest and further diagnostics which show my IP profile to be :-

10 up (actual for the test 4.96)
17.79 down (actual for tjhe test 17.63)
so I am within limits......
I am a fair distance from the cab, hence the lower speed anyway.)

My question is, have I somehow lowered my IP profile by unplugging the kit temporarily during this 10 day time or is it set when first configured?
Would the IP profile have been 17.79 from when it went live and it was just chance it I tested at nearly 19 when we first tested it?

I'm just a little concerned I may have 'lost' nearly 2 mb by turning the kit off/on (to plug in a 4 way extension lead), as it thought the line was unstable. All I get now is about 17.2-17.8 now on any tester.

Thanks in advance, sorry for the rambling post.
Ian

DLM doesn't intervene on the first day, unless severe instability is detected.
You may have triggered DLM, but it should sort itself out in a week or two anyway.
I wouldn't be concerned just now, just see what it's like over the next 10 days or so.

as batboy said and also to add sync speeds do vary, going down from 18mbit to 17mbit isnt nothing out of the ordinary for normal variance.

If you knew about the training etc. it would have been wise to do your electrical changes prior to the installation.

FTTC doesn't have a 10-day training anyway frown. That's even more of a myth than it is on ADSLx.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 51.8/16.8Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

sadly that myth has been engraved into BT staff from top to bottom, a BT engineer who posts on another forum still says "it has to be allowed to train". What they are basically telling the customer is they want to wait for DLM to slow faulty lines down before they will accept a report, and by then its too late as they will consider the new DLM'd speed as that normalised speed.

It's a great way to get rid of a customer and let someone else deal with them a few days later. Customer service staff seem to like this fact.

It'll be fun to see what they say about FTTP and/or FTTPoD faults in the first ten days tongue.

The Openreach engineer quoted the 10 day period to me on Saturday.....

A 10 day course should suffice!

10 day training doesn't really exist as such, which is what everyone's said.

Essential DLM runs 24/7 always. If DLM only ran in the first 10 days - what happens if the line deteriorates 30 days later as more customers are added and crosstalk between lines increases?

What happens if there's several storms the first 10 days. A customer would then have poor speeds permanently.

For this reason DLM is constantly monitoring.

As line conditions can change at any time DLM runs 24/7 adjusting as necessary. The first 10 days aren't really any more important than the 10 - 20th day.

If line conditions improve significantly at any point DLM gives better speeds and vice versa.

It gets worse, now my average tested download speed is now down to just below 16mb, I'm now only about 10mb better off than before Infinity! Better than before obviously but hardly an earth shattering experience. Upload speeds are fairly consistent. frown

Edit - Just seen my IP Profile has dropped to 16.51mb! I don't understand as it has seemingly been fine at the earlier 17.7 ( no apparent drop outs etc) it was before. Am not impressed now! I hope it will not drop any lower.
