Also the email doesn't appear to state that by pre-registering for BT Privacy and Caller Display that a new 12 months contract will apply, or does it when it says "terms apply"?

Moving to PN certainly is the best thing to do smile

Where? Not in the bit you posted.

What is its wording? I might throw some light on the start date of the 1 year contract.

The whole thing is confusing, because it appears if you sign up for LRS then you will not have to pay for BT Privacy & Caller Display, but it if your LRS is active after 40/01 it doesn't say whether you would have to pay until you renew.

No-one has to pay for BT Privacy with Caller Display before 04 Jan, LRS or not.

After 04 Jan everyone pays, unless they have registered for the 12-month commitment offer.

Perhaps not quite everyone is committed to the 12 month contract to line rental if they register or apply for free BT Privacy and Caller Display: my aunt has BT Basic and it seems from a rather vague letter, that she received regarding the price changes, that BT Basic could be terminated without penalty after the price changes even if the free offer is accepted (she currently has free BT Privacy and Caller Display.)

This I haven't confirmed though because my aunt refused the free offer since it is possible that a termination of BT Basic with the free BT Privacy and Caller Display could involve the account transforming to standard line rental and if that happened then there could be early termination charges if she left BT Retail within the 12 month period (whenever that starts?)

It's a question yeah. "a new 12-month line rental contract applies". When they say "new", do they mean a new contract (with new terms) will replace the old contract and old terms?

It's a far too ambiguous page and really should have been better worded given how much interest it will get in the next 5 weeks.

It just seems like a means to attract folks to commit to a new 12 months contract with new T&C's since the "free" offer changes the T&C's of their account?

It seems telcos like to say "contract" instead of "minimum term" these days.

It confuses the likes of me, since "contract" to me means a set of terms and conditions to which one commits, and does not solely represent the length of the minimum term.

From the pre-reg page:

*Pre-register before 6th December 2013. Provision on or after 6th December 2013. Pre-registration available only to existing BT Privacy with Caller Display customers excludes customers with other varieties of Caller Display such as Caller Display as part of a Calling Features Pack. Provides BT Privacy with Caller Display free for 12 months from date of provision. A new 12 month line rental contract applies.

The 12 months starts "from date of provision". And provision will be "on or after 6th December". So, whatever date they get around to provisioning will be the start date of the 12 months.
