Home Hub 5 Messed Up My Line?

[link to this post]

My line has been rock solid on Infinity since i had it installed over 2 years ago, with the modem unlocked i have been able to see that i have always been connected at maximum sync and the jobs been a good'un.

After deciding one box was the way to go i ordered a Home Hub 5 which arrived yesterday. After installing it i noticed something was wrong and indeed the router was showing a sync of 40/10, in the night it rebooted its self and now has a sync of this:

6. Data rate: 9999 / 34993
7. Maximum data rate: 28015 / 108290
8. Noise margin: 18.4 / 27.3
9. Line attenuation: 0.0 / 5.8
10. Signal attenuation: 0.0 / 5.8

My profile has been set to 33.87 according to the BT tester.

Any ideas ladies and gentlemen please? HH5 just testing the water to get the maximum sync (which would seem a bit odd to me given its been rock solid for over 2 years) or is the router a duff one?

Routers negotiate the best possible speed within the parameters set by the cabinet hardware.

Are the speeds still bad if you go back to the unlocked device? i.e. looking at the HH5 behaving poorly on your line.

yeah, when i put the modem and HH4 back on the profile is still set to 33.87Mbit so what ever has happened has made a good job of it.

What are the sync speeds though with the original modem and HH4? It sounds as though your connection may have been "banded".

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 59.4/14.4Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

One of the foreign tech blokes said they are sending me a new HH5 out today.

One of the UK tech ladies said BT have you down on Infinity 2 but our supplier has you down on Infinity 1 (which would explain the instant 40/10 sync). When i questioned her why it would have been changed after 2 years she couldn't answer and said she had requested it be put back but this could take over a week.

so that's as much as i know at the minute, if by some miracle another HH5 turns up ill shove that on and see what happens.

If that were correct your connection speed would be 39997-39999.

It was, the sync when i put the HH5 on was 9999/39999 until it rebooted in the night and resynced at a lower speed. However since the last reboot to the lower sync the HH5 has rebooted on its own accord yet again and has synced at 16995 / 59995 (with a noise margin of 20db). Hopefully the next one will be back to full steam ahead.

It seems to me the modem in the HH5 spends a few days testing the water.

Just had a phone call from BT telling me my line was never capable of 75Mbit and it never will be due to the copper in the line.

whats the estimate on BTw checker?

Also if you still have your signup email that will show the estimate at the point of sale.

I am guessing the estimate is below 80mbit and they are using that as a cop out, with me they also completely ignored the line history.

your original post shows the line is itself is capable of over 100Mb

"7. Maximum data rate: 28015 / 108290"

this may fall if crosstalk becomes an issue

2 years when the cab was empty ago it read over 129Mbit so crosstalk has already done its dirty deed smile

I have gone back to my HH4 and modem and will be sending the HH5 back, the WiFi on the HH4 is miles better, that said i am pretty sure it wasn't the HH5 that did my line in, i think someone messed up when i ordered it and changed me to Infinity 1.

The profiles are now at 58.07Mbp down and 20Mbit up although its yet to get anything like the 18Mbit it used to be, its only about 13Mbit regardless of wire or wireless and i am not too sure why that would be.

Im hoping the line will fully recover in the coming days if the DLM is constantly monitoring the line.

When did the profiles change from Infinity 1? Oh, I see - yesterday.

I think the HH5 really did mess up your line frown
