Line failure

Could someone please explain why, having suddenly lost both broadband and the phone earlier today, I now have my broadband restored but still no phone link. I had assumed water in the ducting somewhere, but maybe the exchange roof leaks!

The BT website just mentions 'problems' in my exchange area (Bentley, Hants)

Are you on Infinity, or ADSLx?

If on ADSLx, is the speed reasonably good, or dismally poor?

ADSL2 (I think) is better when I posted than it was this morning. Phone line has just reappeared an hour or two after the broadband.

What was the original speed? Then when it was initially restored and finally now?

ADSL can run on a single leg from te exchange whereas voice requires both. It will be significantly slower but it can still work.

If for example a cabinet was flooded or a joint got wet then it would fail for both voice and ADSL, then as it dries out one may dry before teh other resulting in ADSL only.

Could it also be that the ADSL part of the Exchange came back on-line first?

To what degree are Phone, ADSL and VDSL, separated; just as at the consumer end in the home, with filters, separate racks etc?

This has happened to me twice in the last 3 months. First the phone and broadband goes dead, then the broadband (FTTC) comes back on after a few hours at about half normal speed. A few days later an engineer fixes the phone line, but then a DSLAM reset is required before normal broadband speeds are restored.

If an exchange fails priority will be given to getting voice working. There are battery supplies in te exchanges and in a power failure they would again give voice priority.

2.06 Mbps download yesterday morning, 2.05 Mbps when restored. The day to day variation is greater than this. I don't have a record of the actual line speed.

Dunno why but you will find that ADSL works with just 1 leg connected A or B, the same happened to me.

I dont know about Infinity though.
