Hay Guys,
I remember reading last year that BT will be offering BT Infinity Self Install from 31 Dec 2013.
I have been to the BT.com web page every so often but cant see anything there.
Is it all on hold?
Has anyone got any news or update on what this might happen?

People are getting self installs done, a reasonable scattering across the forums.

Infinity 1 can be done as self install, but #2 is engineer install? What's the difference between both of them?

I suspect it's a speed issue. BT perhaps feel that those going for Infinity 2 or a TV option will suffer more, or more accurately, notice more the effects of poor internal wiring.

Infinity 2 is capped at 80/20 Mbps.
Infinity 1 is capped at 40/10 Mbps.
With less than half the speed, BT are probably thinking there'll be plenty of SNR margin to handle noise issues due to poor internal wiring. However, if you live on a poor line anyway and your Infinity2/ Infinity1 speeds will be low, they will optionally not allow a self install but insist on an engineer.

So, reading between the lines, a self install perpetuates the situation we have with ADSL where I have to use filters on all phone sockets but I can plug the modem / router into any of them? Though, obviously, I can replace the faceplate myself and run an Ethernet cable to my preferred modem / route location.
Thanks,
John

Nice reply. Just to fill any gaps, if you do go for self-install the HH5 is packed with a couple of micro-filters, an Ethernet cable,RJ11 cable, installation instructions, just like a router for an ADSL service. Its a long thin box rather than a short fat one so it should fit through a letter box.

Thanks S but I'm with Zen and, if at all possible, I'll be staying there. I have experienced BT "support" and Zen is worth the extra.
Thanks,

No interstitial faceplate included?

No. The installation instructions do go as far as showing how to connect if you do have centralised filtering already, but no SSFP is included.

That's what I'd like to know.
Had a long telephone conversation with BT last week because I had tried to order an Infinity 1 self install upgrade through the BT website. The website says this is possible but the ordering process demanded a date for the engineer to call. It said categorically that I had to be available.
I'm not sure that the lady at BT knew what self install was. I had to explain that I can never guarantee to be available so, in the end, I had to tell her not to proceed with the order.
I don't know what the problem is. I have good copper broadband speeds, the NTE5 box is at the end of a short length of (BT) cable from the external box, I have no extension wiring and certainly no star wiring, and my neighbours have better Infinity speeds than I was applying for.
Nobody could tell me why I could not have self install and, to add insult to injury, I received two identical letters this morning telling me about my forthcoming upgrade and engineer visit. I phoned to cancel (again) but I'm expecting another letter in due course asking me why I wasn't available.
Total mess.

I have just received my HH5 as I am going live on 30th, will I still need the White openreach box which I currently have connected to my Sky router?
I currently have Sky Fibre 40/10
thanks

Optional. Whichever suits you best for the location of the HH5.

currently both the Openreach box and Sky router are sitting next to each other on my desk.....but if I don't need the openreach box any longer then it takes up less space.....
is it required for the HH5? or will it just be the same without it.
thanks

No, the HH5 has a VDSL2 modem built in, but you can use it with the OR modem if you want
|
|

if it doesn't make any difference I probably wont use it....another power cord and space saved
thanks

Correct .
Keep it for spare, as if anything goes badly wrong you can get an under £30 perfectly good router within 24 hours (Buffalo off Amazon) if the HH5 goes wonky and BT take a few days to replace it.
