BT in denial over Ubisoft issues

BT have once again changed their routing to Ubisoft making gaming impossible. They had fixed it for a while by changing their transit to use TATA to avoid TInet, but this week they have swapped back to the previous broken routing.

That is NOT a BT issue but TINET or Level3 well down the routing. BT can hand over traffic to a multitude of other carriers and what they then do with it is out of BTs control.

As it happens, I can access the site without issues. BT hands over to Level3 - as before but Level3 hands over to a different carrier that uses the as6453.net domain ...

as6453.net Are a poor choice, they seems to think that routing traffic from NewYork
To Montreal Canada ( where Ubisoft.com servers are ) should go Via Chicago as of the past 3 months adding some 20-30ms to the base latency , plus some of these routes show signs of congestion during certain times as a result latency increases further still,
And seeing as this is a gaming server you would think that it would always take the shortest route that would provide the lowest latency,

Also the problem affects Uplay only games and not older games that don't use it,

as6453.net is TATA Communications as previously mentioned. While not perfect, at least it works. In contrast TInet doesn't work at all.

As far as I can see it's up to BT to negotiate routing that works, to serve their customers.

is this normal? i can access and login to the website though?

Conversely it is down to gaming software houses to ensure that a single routing issue cannot block access to their gaming service.

This is one of those issues that needs work and changes from multiple people, so while blame can be laid at the door of BT Retail given the number of applications that use the Internet keeping track of all of them as an ISP is a task that is endless and potentially very expensive.

I'm aware that Neil McRae was hoping to have a conversation with Ubisoft about the issue but lost contact with them. Subsequently he deleted/hid all his tweets and is effectively off-air. I wonder if he's now left BT.

Why not complain about everything going via London? People who live in Cornwall have all their traffic routed to London before it goes back to Cornwall and across the Atlantic from there.

Most ISP's data centers are in london, is the reason why most goes via it, as well as some of the main peering transits,

But this as6453.net issue is a recent problem, because for years traffic was not routed via chicago , it took the direct route NewYork to Montreal (ubisoft server farm) with a typical ping range of 89-95ms it currently is 110ms rising to over 130ms at times of congestion

No good for playing FPS type games , even hosting the game

This ISP uses tinet does it's customers have the same issues?

So as6453.net does not have a direct Montreal to NY link and use one via their data centre in Chicago ... nothing wrong with that just as you say nothing wrong with Cornish traffic being routed via London - companies make a commercial decision based on volumes, cost and infrastructure and that is what they offer.
