Actually, looks like 123-reg have finally added SSL to their email servers:

However, I do have a slight preference for STARTTLS on SMTP over port 25/587 by virtue of it being more RFC compliant, but that's a personal thing.

I do know that 1and1 use STARTTLS on SMTP over port 25/587, and the freebie providers (Gmail/Outlook/Yahoo) support it too.
