Possible outage? (red flashing lights on hub v4)

Hi all, I'm currently holidaying in the lakes and the BT hub here wad working fine (rural speeds however ). Yesterday afternoon the Internet connection wasn't working and all we see I'd a red light flashing on the box. We followed so far the instructions that come up when you try to access a webpage but no luck.

Anyone in a position to lend some info, ie is there a known outage in the area? We are in Near Sawrey close to Windermere.

Ps the best I can do is 1 bar of EDGE on my smartphone so it's difficult to get much info from the BT service status page.

Is there a dial tone on the phoneline?

No phone, just the hub with a filter.

Tried the BT service checker on a nearby hotels phone number but the pqage says it's not a valid BT number!?

Is there a postcode checker I could use instead?

Have you rebooted the hub?

Yes we tried that (the hub intercepts any web page requests with its own "theres a problem" page on the hub).

We are back from holiday now but the owners had someone go round and try to sort it.

The phone line was totally dead so not much to diagnose there

If the phone line is totally dead then the broadband will either also be so, or extremely severely degraded. The latter occurring when one wire of the pair is disconnected.
