Torrents Slow Today

[link to this post]

Anyone else have this? Since 1pm today on BT Infinity, torrents are going slow, yo-yoing a lot, dropping lot of the time to <10kB/s. In bursts and at the start you can see it trying to go full rate, then it nose dives - much like throttled connections.

Normally, torrents fly at all times.

Everything is very well seeded, and the same torrents that were approaching 9MB/s this morning are now crawling. It's getting slightly better now over the past 10 mins, but still bad. I've rebooted modem and router, and swapped client machine.

Regular downloads and speed tests are fine: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html...

It gradually resolved itself over the 30 mins following my post, and is now back to normal. Never seen this before, hopefully a one-off glitch...

(I am on a totally unlimited package).

All my torrent proxy sites are now banned,I'm not sure I made the right move in changing to BT as I hate internet censorship .

It's true that the govt pressures the larger ISP's such as BT, Sky and TT to censor sites, whereas smaller providers don't have to.

If you know (or can find) the IP addresses, why not just use them? AFAIK the blocking is just by DNS.

e.g. TPB can be reached at http://194.71.107.80

A couple of clicks and that's it.
Much easier and less time consuming than going into Network>Change adapter settings>LAN>Propertes>etc.etc.
Try it and see - it works for a lot of sites.smile

Download the zip file from the link given earlier, uupack it and click dnsjumper.exe to use it- there's nothing to install
Using it is self explanatory and there are images on the site.
Basically click:
Fastest DNS>Find fastest DNS then when it finds the fastest click Apply Fastest DNS and that really is it

Sorry I can't help with a Mac - the tool only works with Windows.
DNS Jumper is anything but complicated - it's a more long-winded process changing DNS manually

Still, there's no reason not to try manually changing DNS servers on a Mac as it doesn't seem hard from what I've read.
e.g. http://www.plus.net/support/software/dns/changing_dn...

Try Google or OpenDNS servers to start with

I'm totally confused mate at all this stuff,I'm not technically minded to be honest I just get by,turn on mac and look at websites and download stuff .

The best and easiest way at present was to type in the IP address of the site which was provided by a user in this thread....that was quick simple and effective .

I appreciate all your help and support but don't waste any more of your time because it's well over my head wink

You can get an additional 1GB per month free if you tweet about them on Twitter. Then if you want over that free 1.5GB monthly, it is either $4.99 a month, or $4.17 a month if you sign up for a year (i.e. total cost $49.99 a year).

Personally I use Private Internet Access, as that only works out at $3.33 a month (that is about £2 in proper money) on their yearly plan (i.e. total cost $39.95 a year), plus with PIA I can connect 5 devices simultaneously, whereas TunnelBear only allows you to connect 3 devices simultaneously I think (maybe a TunnelBear user can confirm it is just 3 devices simultaneously?) .

Private Internet Access gives you about 10 different countries to connect through and about 18 gateways in total (e.g. there are 7 gateways in the US etc.).

I forgot about this topic, but I see you are still an active user here.

Word of warning about using proxy sites if you use them to do things you shouldn't be doing: Proxy sites may/will be logging your IP address as Cody Kretsinger discovered to his cost.

Obviously nobody should be doing anything on the net using proxies that they shouldn't be doing, so Cody got his just desserts eh? wink

Also some VPNs log IP addresses as well, but thankfully some don't.
