Hi,
Is anyone else experiencing really slow browsing? It seems like slow DNS lookup but it's still slow using OpenDNS or Google DNS servers.
There's a long thread on the BT forums ( https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity-Speed-Connec... ) and one poster reckons it's due to the Government requiring BT to "sniff" traffic upstream of the DNS servers. I don't think it's due to BT having to remove their DLM a week or two ago.
To be honest, I was quite surprised not to see any posts about on tbb.
John.

Browsing speed - fine using BT default DNS
Up/Down speeds and throughput - normal
Latency - Normal

Thanks. Well, my post has had 56 reads now with nobody saying they have problems. I always view the BT.com Forum posts with caution (!) so I'd better look a bit closer to home.
Thanks,
John.

I am also having the same problems John. Doing a speediest is fine, however web browsing is sporadic with some sites slow to load or timing out completely.
Has been like this since last night for me.
When I connect using a VPN, everything works fine.

Same problem with ADSL2+
Most of time works fine, other times slow to access another site or, no access at all. Sporadic as though congested.

yep same here, been about a week now with dns issues

Similar problems here. Using either Google DNS or Level3 (4.2.2.x) so it's probably not a DNS issue, something wrong somewhere though. From peoples' posts on the BT Community site, no point trying to talk to 1st line support as they're telling folks to restart their routers.....

If you think it's something to do with BT intercepting DNS on Port 53, give encryption a try - see http://dnscrypt.org

I'm not convinced it's DNS - for example, I was on another site (Overclockers forums), went to reply to a post and got a "Page could not be displayed" error briefly then the page loaded after about 10 - 15 seconds of Chrome sitting with "Connecting..." in bottom left.
So I'm already on the site so shouldn't be doing more DNS lookups as the site should be in my local cache on PC, given I had browsed to it earlier.

From what I can gather reading the BT forum, it's not a DNS issue as such. Rather the traffic is being "inspected" before it even gets that far. Popular opinion is that the equipment they're using is either mis-configured or simply isn't fast enough to cope with demand.
BT is the first ISP I've used that doesn't have a particularly transparent "relationship" with its customers. They're reluctant to make the mistake other ISPs make and admit that there is, indeed, an issue because that then puts the ball firmly in their court .
By being in denial, they're in no particular rush to fix it although, hopefully, they will fix it.

I've been having these issues on BT Infinity 2 for the last few days.
I changed my router's DNS setting to use Google's DNS servers and the symptoms are the same. General download speed is fine, speedtests are normal as is ping. However when browsing, some websites stop loading and I get page can not be found errors, do a refresh and it loads fine.

I'm having the same problems as described in the BT thread. Been bad for a few days. Changing DNS makes no difference.

BT have finally acknowledged there is a problem on their Status Page. Intermittent issues when loading webpages.
It also mentions problems on the TV Status Page so, hopefully, they're aware that the problem is affecting everything.

Thought I'd add my pennyworth.
Could this be nothing whatsoever to do with DNS or routing but possibly something to do with the browser that's being used? I myself have been having 'slow resolving to screen' problems of late, including many occasions when the resolving would fail completely, and after meticulous checking of my router settings, DNS etc., I could still find nothing wrong. This very website, for example, would - and still does - load very slowly, despite it being fast and zippy up until about a month ago.
But then when I finally switched temporarily to a different computer of mine - a Windows machine running IE8 - on the same home network, the issue was not there. With my main machine being a Mac, running Safari, the only conclusion I could draw was that it was Safari that was the problem. It looked like the last update to Safari had clobbered it in this respect, and I'm now stuck with the problem until Apple does something about it.
Nothing has been mentioned so far in this thread of the browsers being used, but I do wonder therefore whether if some comparisons were made we'd find that the slow resolving issue is tending to occur on machines running Safari rather than any other browser. Certainly, in recent weeks many people on the Mac forums at apple.com have been complaining about the self same symptoms.

I'm not convinced that they've fixed it yet. Been having lots of pages time out, pages load without images, etc.

I'm still having problems, slow loading of pages, sometimes not loading at all. I'm on Infinity 1 and it's an intermittent problem that's been going on since December but I blamed it on a slow computer until I tried another.
It's not browser related as I use IE8, Firefox and Chrome. Chrome is slowest as I use an encrypted connection but IE8 seems to be the most likely to be so slow it times out sometimes. I'm sure it isn't browser-related though.

I've noticed it slowing down again the last day or two.
I can't help wondering if the original problem was related to some sort of packet inspection kit not being able to cope with the load which was resolved by taking traffic away from it. I'm now wondering if BT are gradually re-introducing traffic and waiting until people start complaining again.
John.
