HH5 updated firmware.

[link to this post]

My HH5 rebooted last night and I noticed the new firmware had been installed.

3. Firmware version: Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.204 (Type A) Last updated 16/01/15

Not sure what the new firmware brings to the HH5? Anyone know?

I've noticed both line attenuation and signal attenuation are now displayed fully in the router information pages.

BT need to start publishing what their firmware does. They need a different mindset instead of being overly secretative about things.

Looking around the interweb's it seems that one area that this firmware as made a slight improvement on is VPN.

Quoting from http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=145&t=...

I have recently upgraded to BT Infinity Fibre broadband, and my router has changed from BT Homehub 4 to BT Homehub 5.
Before this change, I was able to successfully VPN into my Synology 413J.
I have configured the BT Homehub 5 port forwading exactlty the same as it was with BT Homehub 4.
I can successfully remotely connect to 413J via DNS address, but unable to VPN into it.
Receive message "Verifying user name and password", which appears to succeed, then,
after some time, receive message "Error 800: The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed ....."
Anybody have any ideas how to resolve this ???

The after this current firmware update;

I progressed the issue with BT and they provided an Openreach modem which I installed with the BT Homehub 4. However this did not resolve the VPN issue.

BT support performed VPN testing on Synology, and confirmed that VPN was OK on ADSL line with HH4, but not OK on Fibre with Openreach Modem/HH4 or HH5.

BT hub developers worked on the issue and updated the HH5 firmware.
VPN now OK using PPTP and L2TP-Certificate authentication protocols.
Still unable to establish VPN connection using L2TP - pre-shared key
BT are aware of this and currently working on the issue.

My original HH5 firmware was 4.7.5.1.83.8.173.1.6, Current firmware 4.7.5.1.83.8.204
BT inform me that they are currently rolling out the firmware update to existing HH5 customers

I don't use VPN on the HH5. But I thought it was interesting information. Not sure if others have similar issues before, and then fixed after?

I was trialing it back in November, I think one of the main fixes is the wireless.

I now get better speed and coverage at my parents. Whereas before the wireless was very shabby.

Odd.. My home hub 5 has a very different firmware version... I use infinity but does that make a difference to the firmware?

3. Firmware version: v0.07.01.0235-BT (Type B) Last updated [Unknown]

I have a max rate sync but the wifi is woeful getting anywhere between 5mb and 70mb when sat next to the hub... Hard wired speeds are consistently good have followed all the guides splitting the 5g etc and none seem to have worked.

I think it's because you have a Type B HH5, not a Type A.

Have you turned off smart wireless by selecting a manual channel?

Have you turned off smart setup?

Have you split the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks with a different SSID?

Yeah, done all that.. At first you think your winning as you start downloading at 70 odd Meg.. Then an hour or two later back to reduced speeds until you start messing about again

So you did all that and then you did a factory reset to turn it off again?

Hey not done a factory reset since.. Put wifi back to auto on the 2g and 5g.. But still split on the SSID between the two.. Even plugged an old hh4 into hh5 as a wifi extender and had same problems

Thanks

Another new firmware on the way to be tested:

We are pleased to inform you that a new improved firmware is soon to become available within the next week. Please ensure your Hub remains switched on and connected to your broadband for the next week or two in order to receive it successfully

The new firmware will include fixes for some previously reported problems from the trial last year. We will contact you directly to advise you of any action required if necessary or if this firmware has any immediate impact to or if you have previously reported any issues it may rectify.

What do you need to do?

Just make sure your hub is connected up and wait for the confirmation the firmware is on the way.

Not sure I understand this update.

My version is showing BT Home Hub 5 (Type A) | Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.204 | Last updated 17/05/14

Others are saying this version is new so why is the date on mine saying 17/05/14 ? It's puzzling me.

I suspect if you reboot the hh5, it will revise the update date

I have rebooted the HH5 and the date remains the same.
