Slow TBB speeds and slow download speed

Hi, I've been struggling with very slow single threaded download speeds on my BT Infinity 2 connection. I'm also experiencing a lot of buffering on YouTube videos, as they only stream at 9000Kbps or so.

As you can see in this speedtest, something isn't right.

I see no obvious congestion from a traceroute, as my pings are fine. My connection is currently synced at 79998/16995.

Wired or Wireless? Direct Ethernet or via Homeplugs? AV running and causing problems?

Running wired with direct ethernet. I've tested on multiple devices and the problem happens on all of them.

I've also noticed some strange behaviour; certain servers I have no problem with speeds, for example most speedtest.net servers based in London: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5471973256

However, the further I go out of London, the worse the speed gets: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5471978085 (I am located in London, by the way).

Download speed for most files over HTTP go no higher than 1,000KB/s.

It is probably not this but just something to try, I also don't want to sound paranoid or anything, but try disabling the Wi-Fi on the modem/router and once disabled try the tests again over wired.

Does the tests increase while Wi-Fi is disabled, if so, somebody could be piggy backing your Wi-Fi.

Are you also using those hot plugs for extending your signal around your house, if so unplug them and try the speed tests again with them all unplugged, if the speed increases then somebody down your road might have similar hot plug devices that some how has linked up to your hot plugs devices.

Like I have said I am not trying to be paranoid or anything, but its good to test those to rule them out.

When ever we loose speed here, the Wi-Fi is the first thing to get disabled to rule that part out.

But it might not even be those and could just be congestion in your area.

Right, so.

I tried disabling the WiFi to no avail, I also am not using any homeplugs.

I then decided to unplug and plug in the Ethernet cable at both ends (cat 6), which to my surprise actually fixed it! I probably should've tried that before making this post, but it didn't cross my mind that it would be as simple as that.

Faulty cable - get it replaced

I was shocked when I was reading this post, as I haven't seen a genuine case of congestion at BT in a long time now.

If the problem occurs again then I'll have to get a new cable, only got this one a few months ago so I'd rather not have to replace it!
