Can't find server I manage

[link to this post]

I'm wondering if anyone has an idea on why this happens and asking if others can reach a site I manage.
I'm a volunteer sysadmin for a server in the USA and since December I can't resolve the domain through BT. There are rare, intermittent times when it does resolve, but usually I get an error that it can't be found. With BT that is. The domain resolves on my phone and through a proxy, but not with BT.
I can't reach www.greece.org or the company that hosts it, arktelecom.com when connected through BT. I can do so by using the IPV4 number but that doesn't work for everything and the proxy I have to use for the web is slow. According to BT Technical the fault is with the server DNS but that makes no sense as I can reach it with my mobile provider. In fact one BT person told me that because I can resolve with my mobile that proved the server DNS wasn't working!.

Does anyone have any idea how I can persuade BT to check this particular domain, as it is very important that I can reach it? Also, I'd appreciate it id a few good folks could check if the domain resolves for them as that would help with troubleshooting.

BTW I get rare times when greece.org does resolve and sends a lot of mail to me, then it's unreachable again.
I'd switch ISP but I'm stuck in a contract for another 20 months. Also I have no problems with other sites. I did try setting Google DNS once, my domain resolved using it, but nothing else did with the HH5.

I can't solve the problem, but I'm on AAISP and I cant get to it either. So it isn't just BT.

Using online checkers the site is apparently up.

My EE mobile (owned by BT) just ignores the request to go to it. Not even an error message.

I'm on BT and I've no trouble getting to either site.

What DNS are you using? These are the top 4 I use

84.200.69.80
64.6.64.6
84.200.70.40
64.6.65.6

You can set the DNS on your individual PC's / laptop, you don't have to use those assigned by BT - but I guess you know that smile

I've no idea how to configure the DNS on the HH5 as I don't use it, but I'm sure someone will be along that does.

Does not load on TalkTalk or BT for both.

It certainly is not BT specific.

I have default configuration for both ISPs. ISP provided DNS etc.

Thanks for the info. I know you can set the DNS on the PC but I don't think there's any way it can be done on the HH5.
I tried the Google DNS with another router that does allow you to set DNS but with that it resolved this domain and nothing else.
I normally let the hub set the DNS but I'll try setting it myself in the hope that works, not done so yet as when I was about to it suddenly resolved, for 5 hours before I lost it again..

Re: Can't find server I manage

[re: kritifile] [link to this post]

I don't think this is so much of a problem of BT or of the resolver DNS, more about how the domain is set up. There are a number of issues:

1) Who-is reports 2 Name servers for the domain:
whois greece.org
Domain Name: GREECE.ORG
Registry Domain ID: D69095-LROR
[SNIP.....]
Name Server: NS1.SYSNET.NET
Name Server: NS2.SYSNET.NET

2) However DNS only has one :
dig ns greece.org.
[SNIP....]
;; ANSWER SECTION:
greece.org. 3502 IN NS ns1.sysnet.net.

3) Moreover, querying that name server:

dig www.greece.org @ns1.sysnet.net

;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: FORMERR, id: 22552
;; flags: qr rd ra ad; QUERY: 0, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0

;; WARNING: EDNS query returned status FORMERR - retry with '+noedns'

oh.... that's not good : nameserver does not support EDNS and returns an error.

However turning off EDNS does yield a result:
dig www.greece.org @ns1.sysnet.net +noedns

;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 43474
;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 2, AUTHORITY: 1, ADDITIONAL: 1

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;www.greece.org. IN A

;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.greece.org. 4000 IN CNAME hec2.greece.org.
hec2.greece.org. 4000 IN A 64.118.198.21

;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
greece.org. 4000 IN NS ns1.sysnet.net.

;; ADDITIONAL SECTION:
ns1.sysnet.net. 4000 IN A 64.118.200.2

The site resolves here ... but my recursive name servers are configured to try to be "Forgiving" to configuration issues .... other recursive name servers may not (which is why I assume the site is failing for some but not all.) The biggest issue is the authorative name server for greece.org returning the FORMERR.

In summary, I think you need to look at the DNS registration for that domain.

Thanks for digging that up im1. I've long suspected it was a DNS problem at the server end, but because I could usually access with Vodaphone (but can't manage a server on a phone) and using a proxy I wasn't sure.
One of the domains I'm partly responsible for, the other hosts Greece.org and has customers worldwide, and I've been suggesting that there's a DNS problem somewhere since December when it stopped resolving.

I'm no expert on DNS but I found a few problems (including a loop at one time).
That info is very useful to me (and I'd forgotten that DIG existed).

I don't know if this will be resolved, and I am wondering if some ISPs are more forgiving than others, but thanks for searching that out and I'm sending it over the pond as I have no access to the DNS servers there.

Thanks again, thanks to all who replied. I think the mystery of why it resolves for some and not others may be solved.

I still don't understand why, once every two or three weeks, it resolves for anything between a minute and five hours.

Many ISP will have a pool of recursive servers for their clients : in part for load balancing, in part redundancy in case one or more fails. It's not unknown for there to be configuration differences between the various servers which might make some more "forgiving" than others which would explain why it works for while, occasionally.

Sometimes, ISP will even use a diversity of hardware and/or software also to protect against bugs/defects/vulnerabilities in the respective implementations and that too would potentially explain the observed behaviour.

This is nothing but speculation of course ... the real corrective action is, as you have done, get the issues addressed on the authoritative server (which ideally should be servers!)

In addition to ns1.sysnet.net returning poorly configured records, ns2.sysnet.net, which is listed at the parent nameservers, isn't even responding. Whoever configured those DNS records made a complete mess of it.

It's not been solved in spite of many emails.
The strange thing is, every few weeks the domain resolves on BT for anything between a few minutes and a few hours, then I lose it again.
No problems using the Vodafone mobile network or using an anonymous web proxy but not everything can be done on the web.
I've tried using Google DNS with both the HH5 and a TP-Link that allows me to change DNS on the router as well as setting BT DNS manually, that gives me access to the server, but I have to change it back to default because nothing but greece.org and arktelecom.com resolve if I set DNS manually. With both Google and manually set BT DNS nothing else resolves!

Noting the nameserver names are the same for both your domain and the web host, I'm guessing it's the webhost who isn't playing ball and has one nameserver offline, and according the posts above, the other poorly configured.

If you can't change webhost you do have several options... personally I'd be concerned with my domain only resolving some of the time, as it will prevent many of your "users" getting to your site too. It's not going to just be a problem for you as admin.

If you can't get the webhost to fix the problem, you can host DNS elsewhere and leave the website where it is. Generally you can host DNS with the domain registrar. I see the tech contact for your domain is listed as:

Name: Thanos Voudouris
Organization: Hellenic Electronic Center
Mailing Address: 10201 Grosvenor Place, N. Bethesda MD 20852 US
Phone: +1.2408889585
Ext:
Fax: +1.9999999999
Fax Ext:
Email:[email protected]

Do you have contact with them?

Also, just to fix the problem for yourself, you can use the hosts file on your PC as another way of mapping the domain name to the IP address (noting if you just try to access the IP address direct you often can't as the server hosts many domains and doesn't know which you're trying to access).

How have you tested that?

I used tracert at a command line prompt. That shows on the first line the IP address it has found, as you can see in my earlier post. Then a few hops down the line it hits a brick wall.

Using a browser all you see is the brick wall. But behind the scenes the DNS servers had supplied the browser with the correct target address.

traceroute www.greece.org -T -p80

Possibly 64.118.201.6 is some kind of firewall which drops the ICMP packets that windows uses by default and the UDP packets linux uses by default.

I was merely using it to prove or disprove the working or not of my DNS servers, and suggest others with the problem may find it useful.

I believe that although neither IE11 or Chrome can reach the two sites in question in the OP, the fact that tracert ascertains a target address and a route to it shows there is nothing wrong with the DNS servers.

You warn against using it as a diagnostic, but surely it is valid for that purpose?

Many people have been trying or suggesting all sorts of DNS server adjustments. I suspect they are all barking up the wrong tree.

My router has been assigned 79.79.79.77 and 79.79.79.78 as it's DNS servers by TT.

So using NS lookup, first looking up google.com to show it's working.

$ nslookup
>
> server 79.79.79.77
Default server: 79.79.79.77
Address: 79.79.79.77#53
>
>
> google.com
Server: 79.79.79.77
Address: 79.79.79.77#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: google.com
Address: 216.58.210.46
Name: google.com
Address: 216.58.210.46
Name: google.com

>
>
> greece.org
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
>
>
> arktelecom.com
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
>

Then switching to the other nameserver:

> server 79.79.79.78
Default server: 79.79.79.78
Address: 79.79.79.78#53
>
> google.com

I haven't clue what you are trying to say or prove. Neither seem to ba at all relevant to anything I have posted, and in particular that the DNS servers people are using are not the problem and playing with them is a waste of time.

Please leave it. I made a perfectly sensible and I believe useful post and you keep going on and on and on.

I made one reply, in response to a direct question from you. I won't bother again, it was obviously a waste of time.

Sorry, I was mixing you up with im1

However, if you do a simple tracert I expect your TT DNS Servers give it the correct target address. The route then gets blocked when it gets near there.

What OS are you running? It doesn't look like Windows,

MacOS, but if you want it from Windows:

C:\Users\andy>tracert greece.org

C:\Users\Bob>tracert greece.org

Tracing route to greece.org [64.118.198.21]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 2 ms 2 ms 2 ms 192.168.1.254
2 23 ms 20 ms 30 ms b.gormless.thn.aa.net.uk [90.155.53.52]
3 ^C
C:\Users\Bob>

Ummm! The website is now working using the URL, or!!!

If I enter greece.org into the IE11 URL bar I get this page, the valid site Home Page. But if I enter www.greece.org I get:-
Canít reach this page

ēMake sure the web address http://www.greece.org is correct
That is weird.

Now neither method works.

I wonder if the whole site is running on something like a single office PC or small inhouse Apache server? Not a proper commercial server, and just can't cope? The first link above just worked again when it didn't at the point I wrote the previous short sentence paragraph.

One of the nameservers is still dead, which will undoubtedly cause problems. Other issues may exist too of course.

nslookup -type=ns greece.org d0.org.afilias-nst.org

Server: UnKnown
Address: 2001:500:f::1

greece.org nameserver = ns1.sysnet.net
greece.org nameserver = ns2.sysnet.net

nslookup www.greece.org ns2.sysnet.net

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
Server: UnKnown
Address: 64.118.200.3

I have just connected to Hellenic Electronic Center (www.greece.org) at 00.30 23 May with a BT Consumer connection using both Google's DNS servers and the default BT servers.

Plain traceroutes will often get blocked by overzealous (or just plain cautious) admins; im1 was correct, a traceroute emulating an http connection to the webserver works fine.

I have a feeling the issue is indeed with DNS, but not the end-users' DNS so robertos is absolutely correct, it probably doesn't really matter what local DNS server you're using. I imagine some cache for longer than others and expire at different times, hence why it sometimes works from some ISPs but not others.

If you have the permissions and credentials to do so, you could opt for a third party DNS provider for those domains (such as Hurricane Electric or ClouDNS); you could do it for free, and be far more confident that an authoritative DNS server is always available. I switched my domains' DNS servers from the original registrar's ones to one of those two, and have had no issues with either.

You could also try one of the many website availability monitors (plenty of limited but free options) and set it up to monitor the actual IP address on port 80, at least that way you'll know if the webserver becomes unavailable or if it's just a DNS issue.
