xdB caused noise? Or just noise on line?

Hi all, back once again with a query.

Recently I've noticed there's a lot of noise on the line. Using the Quiet Line Test, it's sometimes intermittent, sometimes very prevailent, but often clears up after a minute or two with QLT. But it also seemed to start around when the exchange put me down through the SNR xdB from 6dB. Now I'm just wondering whether anyone would know whether it's due to the 6dB going down to 4dB or whether it's just noise on the line indicating something that still needs sorting out (weather getting worse makes any issues more easily noticable). Or whether noise on the line is normal after being put down the xdB?

I have noticed that my FEC errors are numbering around in the region of 45 per second. No errored seconds of any variety. And around 320 CRC errors/620 ATUCCRC erros for around 5 days uptime (since I last reset the W9970 for an update). Connection speed is 79963 (came down after reset 5 days ago; was 79999), Maximum is 83766.

Line should be silent, noise indicates a fault which needs fixing.

Agreed with Batboy's reply.

The noise on the line is the cause of the db change - NOT the other way round.

Report it as a Voice Phone fault to whichever company you pay Line Rental and Voice Phone Charges, avoiding mentioning Broadband.

Even if you never make Voice Calls etc.

That's not how the xdB down to 3db works. You may have got confused when reading the op's post.

The lowering of the dB I thought was related to the recent xdB change where it attempts to lower 6dB down to 3dB. Which is why I asked whether it may be related to the change or not. But as both you and Batboy can confirm that there shouldn't be any noise, I'll give BT a call over it later on.

Yes, sorry it was a bit confusing after re-reading my post.

xdB lowered the normal 6dB that was stable (and little to no noise) down and increased my sync and maximum speeds. I am now at maximum, but a subsequent change to this, is more noticable noise on the voice line. I am now at around 4dB, but the noise is very noticable.

Is this still a voice line issue? Or just a side effect of the lowering via xdB?

Then what is the explanation?

A joint that is getting worse maybe, without a lot more investigation work on the ground impossible to say, and noise issues can be transient too
