Query about FTTP and keeping copper landline..

[link to this post]

Looking to order a full fibre product, but could do with keeping the copper phone line working for the time being as have an alarm dialler.
When choosing a product on the BT website it gives the option of adding a "landline phone service" for £5 per month.
Can anyone tell me if by adding this option it will keep the existing copper voice line and that it is NOT the digital voice?

Thanks smile

With BT you don't get the option of PSTN or Digital Voice.
It's decided by the system and based on area.

If BT are already using Digital Voice in your area then any voice service on FTTP will be via Digital Voice.

Further during the checkout process it will tell you if it is Digital Voice or not.
BT are unable to change this.

I think that Openreach is currently, though not for much longer, installing FTTP using a hybrid cable - this has a fibre and a single copper pair. They're shortly, if not already, dropping the copper pair altogether.

Your order for FTTP shouldn't cease your PSTN line and, if you're lucky enough to get a multi-skilled engineer you may be able to persuade him/her to remove any existing dropwire and use the hybrid cable to run both your PSTN line and your FTTP into the building.

My incoming line in a fibre & copper hybrid. I could have retained the PSTN but had no need.

Have you considered and update to your alarm dialler too?

I had Sky FTTC and phone and changed to the BT 900Mb FTTP last September.

I was supposed to keep my number and copper line during the changeover, but was transferred to digital phone line and a new number. The copper line was re-instated after 4 weeks. When I asked for my old number to be re-instated too I was told it no longer existed, it took BT technical services 3 months to solve that problem.

In May I was informed that all copper lines in my neighbourhood would cease within 12 months and mine within 6 weeks. The changeover went smoothly and I was provided with 3 WiFi portable handsets free of charge.

I still use my old internal copper wiring and old equipment. Simply disconnect the incoming copper pair from the master socket and connect a male to male cable between the Modem phone outlet and any socket.
