2 connections to 1 house?

[link to this post]

Hey Thinkbroadband techy peeps and everyone else out there too.
I hope all are well.

I have a question about Bt connections.

Is it possible to have 2 family members both living in same house, to have their own connection to the property...?

Might seem a silly question....but it will help me out if anyone knows..

Many thanks
Matt

Thanks Ian, I figure it should be...

strange reason really lol

My folks pay the bill and were on fttp which has gone down from 50mbps dl to 35.
I wont get into debating that as their notorious for it..
ring and complain goes back up... months go by, goes back down.. blah blah cycle starts again usaully tripe.

but, in the last 12-18 months BT have shoved some telegraph poles in the ground and now we can have upto 900meg connection...

now, i am pretty tech minded, have my own small business fixing computers locally and helping folks with their wifi issues etc..
have a 3d printer and learning cad.. nuff said..

back to broadband... on my pc without logging into bt i do a broadband checker and see all the lovely available options incl the big one and the pricing etc.....

but if i look from the folks pc and login to bt, i get totally different options to upgrade to and we can renew in 31days... there is no option for the 900mbps connection and thopse that are there are only concerned with silly halo package which is pants.. the list of things you getr aree totally irrelevant and most of the bods that come round never do what they are meant to..

so i wondered, if i set up a new line and get all the new customer bells n whistles and then we just let the folks connection go out of contract and cancel it...

what ya think? any thoughts... im off up the village now to mow an old guys lawn..

will catch up in an hour or so..
cheers Matt smile

I assume the FTTP there is a typo, as your Profile says you are on FTTC?

Are these new telegraph poles with none there before? Or replacements due to age?

Typo by me as well, now corrected.

Connections: OnePlus 8 Pro on Three 4+ (LTE)/5G and at home Three Mobile, with (Three)ZTE MF286D router giving about 113/20Mbps.

In my experience the BT account pages only offer some of the options for upgrade (I assume the ones BT think you are most likely to upgrade to - or indeed that BT want to push). Chances are if your parents rang them then they would be able to upgrade to any of the options.

I am not sure whether you would be considered a "new" customer getting a second line at the address, as the premises already has a line that is being kept then you may not get new customer discounts for the second line.

Yes you can have two connections, just order a new FTTP 900Mb package with your name on ( Make sure it is different to your parents account name).

When it is up and working your parents can cancel their service, they will lose their phone number unless you port it to VOIP. ( Which will also cancel the rest of the service).

If you want to keep it simple and upgrade your parents connection to 900Mb just phone up and place an order.

As Ian points out only a few options show up in the My BT Upgrade Offers section on the BT site.
They can easily upgrade you to any package that they sell and in my experience BT are usually willing to match new customer offers if you are at or near the end of your current deal.

Good point and possibly overlooked by the OP. Perhaps his parents don't want to lose their landline number, even if they no longer want the FTTC broadband.

My thanks to everyone there who as answered....

Yes we are at the momment on an FTTC connection.. my bad.. typo..
the green cab is just over 550metres away and having looked in some of the ducts, is in pretty poor nick.

Yes the telegraph poles are all new and not replacements.... I guess there must have been some reason that they didnt feed the fibres through the ducts and probs easier to plant the poles instead.. Which upset all the neighbours.. Oh dear lol

I will get in touch with BT on my parents behalf.... makes me sound like a kid doesnt it.. im actually 43 lol.. however my folks are 75 next year and would never deal well with talking to bt on the phone and probably have rings run round them..

as im pretty tech savvy and wont take [censored], Ive mostly dealt with BT myself on the phone... the one time my dad spoke with them, he got roped into this Halo package bulldyke which is total malarkey and they never live up to it...
Those times when they are meant to send a supposed tech expert to set your gear up, they just shoved the box in dads hand and said there you go pal..

Do you folks out there think we should get a good deal as loyal customers in an upgrade scenario, or just get fobbed off instead?

Or shall I just go down the route I suggested? After all, they will still have to bring a new line across from the pole as they are no longer using the ducts... Its a stones throw away, roughly 70feet i guess.. any thoughts?

thank you very much for reading. all the best
