BT Home Essentials

[link to this post]

My mother who is over 80 is currently with Vodafone 35Mb via FTTC. She currently pays £25 per month with no calls package. The 2 year contract ends in October. I have suggested that she should switch to BT Home Essentials this would cost her £15.00 per month for 35Mb with 700 mins of phone calls. (They also do upto 67Mb with unlimited phone calls for £20.00 per month). The current FTTC line can not do more than 38Mb. My question is: Would this BT service be delivered via FTTC, like Vodafone? Or would this be delivered via FTTP? FTTP is available and the exchange has a "Stop Sell" date of 2nd August 2022. If she decided to move to BT will there be an engineers visit, or as she is on FTTC at the moment they would just send out a router?

It is quite possible that BT would move the line to FTTP as the stop sell would likely mean they wouldn't provision on FTTC. An engineer would come around to install the fibre cable and to install new equipment inside of the house. They would also provide a new router.

Moving to BT would also mean they would likely move her to Digital Voice - the phone would plug into the router and the phone would only work if the router was on and connected (so in a power cut the phone would not work). This is an issue for some people who are concerned that without a phone in a power cut they would be vulnerable and wouldn't be able to contact emergency services - if she has a mobile phone that she uses that may be less of an issue but it is definitely a concern to some. Even if they provided FTTC they may move her to Digital Voice - it isn't a FTTP only product.
