Ethernet Speed of Smart Hub 2

[link to this post]

I have moved into a new property and have a smart hub 2 connecting to FTTP, with an Ethernet cable going from the smart hub 2 to the Openreach box via the WAN port. I get a speed of around 390 Mpbs which I am happy with.

As the property has thick walls between rooms, I have brought by TP Link Deco E4 mesh Wi-Fi system from my previous property. At my previous property I was with Virgin and got a speed of about 90 Mbps from both the Virgin router and Deco system, which was fine.

However, when connecting the Deco system to the Smart Hub 2, I only get a speed of about 90 Mbps, this is from the first Deco node in the same room as the Smart Hub. I think the Deco should be capable of higher speeds.

Is this situation typical of the Ethernet port speeds of the Smart Hub 2? I need to get a computer in the new flat and connect that by Ethernet to see if that can connect at a higher speed, but can't do that for a week or so.

So in the meantime I was wondering if I have missed anything?

If the Smart Hub 2 can't provide a faster connection, would a different router be better? But if I put a new router in, would my BT TV box still work as I thought that had to connect to a BT Hub / router?

Thank you

The ethernet ports on the Deco E4 are only 10/100 Mbps so 90Mbps throughput is to be expected unfortunately.

The ports on the Hub 2 are Gigabit capable.

It is frankly mad that a device with 802.11ac radios in has a 10/100 ethernet port, though this is listed on the product specs.

I would still send them back as a claim made on TP Link's own marketing says "Deco E4 provides fast and stable connections with speeds of up to 1167 Mbps" which is physically impossible.

Thank you. That was an easy if annoying answer to my issue. I have had the Deco for a while so don't have the box / manuses, but thought from the details on the original Amazon order it would have gone faster!

I'd still try it with Amazon, their agents seem to be instructed to keep the customer happy at all costs and they might just end up refunding you.

It doesn't say what to and from it will achieve those speeds smile
They could reach those speeds between other wifi devices in theory.

Caveat emptor.

It's impossible, it's a 2x2 AC radio so they can't even achieve that as a PHY link from one client. The marketing of home Wi-Fi which is done by adding up the theoretical capacity of every interface on the device is a joke and I'm sure if someone wanted to push the issue it would be ruled as misleading.

867Mb/s over 5GHz AC WiFi + 300Mb/s over 2.4GHz = the 1167Mb/s that they quote.

It's how pretty much every single manufacturer lists their kit using their fastest theoretical WiFi speed.

It's not a great practice imo but it's extremely common to the extent it's pretty much the default way to market wireless devices.

It's not quite a misleading claim for a refund.

"2 x 10/100Mbps Ethernet ports: Take full advantage of your broadband speed"

Hahaha!
