Dramatic drop in speed

[link to this post]

My neighbour is reporting slow speed on Fibre1 with SH2

13:52:01 13 Sep. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=34999kbps, Up Rate=7127kbps; SNR Margin Down=10.6dB, Up=6.1dB
14:00:30 13 Sep. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=34999kbps, Up Rate=7073kbps; SNR Margin Down=10.5dB, Up=6.1dB
00:13:57 14 Sep. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=34999kbps, Up Rate=7146kbps; SNR Margin Down=10.4dB, Up=6.1dB
00:29:52 28 Sep. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=34999kbps, Up Rate=6868kbps; SNR Margin Down=9.0dB, Up=6.0dB
00:45:22 12 Oct. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=34999kbps, Up Rate=6794kbps; SNR Margin Down=8.4dB, Up=6.0dB
03:01:54 20 Oct. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=34999kbps, Up Rate=6805kbps; SNR Margin Down=8.9dB, Up=6.0dB
04:27:32 20 Oct. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=34999kbps, Up Rate=6828kbps; SNR Margin Down=8.9dB, Up=6.0dB
05:10:00 03 Nov. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=34999kbps, Up Rate=6960kbps; SNR Margin Down=9.4dB, Up=6.0dB

There doesn't seem to be anything of note in the log between the last link up and the next one

15:04:11 29 Nov. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=4076kbps, Up Rate=3672kbps; SNR Margin Down=5.6dB, Up=6.0dB
02:25:00 01 Dec. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=3730kbps, Up Rate=4264kbps; SNR Margin Down=5.9dB, Up=6.0dB
09:14:16 01 Dec. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=4151kbps, Up Rate=4596kbps; SNR Margin Down=5.8dB, Up=6.0dB
..........
17:38:32 03 Jan. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=2696kbps, Up Rate=4246kbps; SNR Margin Down=8.8dB, Up=6.0dB
16:22:41 04 Jan. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=2696kbps, Up Rate=4250kbps; SNR Margin Down=7.7dB, Up=6.0dB

Latest stats are:

DSL uptime,1 days 17 Hours 53 Mins 17 Secs
Data rate,4.2 Mbps / 2.7 Mbps
Maximum Data rate,4.1 Mbps / 3.8 Mbps
Noise margin,4.4/7.4
Line attenuation,41.4/38.9
Signal attenuation,41.4/37.4
VLAN id,101
Upstream error control,Off
Downstream error control,Off

I've run an advanced BTW speed test and the IP profile down is 2.48 and 10 up, with no problem with the service being identified.

I'll check for noise later but any ideas why she would drop from 34.999 (looks like capped)/5.779 to 4.0/3.6 between 17 Nov and 29 Nov?

What do BT say? If the drop is genuine then they owe them compensation.

The neighbour has returned from shopping and....

she hasn't had any spam nuisance phone calls for 1 month
her daughter has said she never answers her home phone
the phone itself says "check line cord", and indeed there is no dialtone
she doesn't make outgoing calls so that didn't alert her
netflix was still working

BT fault "bot" service says there is a fault and has raised a case. Logging onto to her BT account to see the fault revealed another fault that was rasied at 04:55 16 Dec 2022 for "slow broadband".

Looks like BT knew about the fault. I woud have thought they would have fixed it by now.

EDIT: There was an OR guy up the pole, replacing a dropwire for another neighbour before Xmas. It could be a coincidence.

All resolved yesterday - a wire issue at the top of the pole. Best speeds seen for a long time following the reset 41/7.

There was mention of compensation in the earlier thread. Router logs show problem started 29 Nov and BT's automated testing recorded slow speed and raised a fault on 16 Dec. It became known to us on 6 Jan when we raised another fault.

In my view, it didn't seem to be impacting the neighbour so is there a case for compensation?

My neighbour may think differently.

If everyone is happy it's probably more trouble than it is worth to try to get compensation for the reduced service.

It looks like you had a one leg dis fault, broadband can work on one of the two wires in the pair, telephone can't.
