The modem firmware is now only available as an IOS download. SmartNet contracts are not expensive, if you can afford the router, pay for the updates.

Very useful thread. I've seen the same issues in several forums including Cisco support.

I have five of these 877s on Zen VPN8000 connections with long lines on various BT exchanges. Two in particular with long lines are giving me similar problems with line drops. I deduced via Samknows that one exchange is 21CN and despite being upgraded to "20MB max" I can't get it to connect in ADSL2+. The ADSL firmware is 3.0.??, even on a replacement that I purchased a couple of weeks ago.

I'm now in the process of sourcing ADSL firmware and IOS updates via the Smartnet route so it will be interesting to see if it solves this particular issue. I've also ordered a consumer-grade Netgear DG834 (which from home experience works very well with ADSL2+) which will prove a point if it is more stable than my current Cisco firmware!

Depends on the version of the DG384

v3 works well with BT lines (plusnet,zen ect)
v4 for LLU lines (BE/o2 ect) but also does an alright job for BT lines
v5 is meh for most connections.

I ran the firmware listed in the link on my 877 for a day and I'm afraid to say it doesn't solve the ADSL2+ problem for me. Initially the connection is good and it remains good for several hours then the ATM interface starts recording tons of CRC errors, browsing becomes like treacle and we start seeing packet loss.

The SNR doesn't drop (as previously seen in other versions of the firmware) however the connection is unusable after several hours.

I have now gone back to using a Netgear DG834 for the line sync and getting the Cisco to do PPPoE.
