FTTC - which cabinets and when?

[link to this post]

Hi
According to the BT Infinity website our local exchange is due to launch with FTTC on 30th September this year.

Does this mean that everyone on the exchange will be able to get some kind of fibre service from that date? Or will it be a postcode lottery for the local cabinets?

From looking at other posts it seems as if cabinets get rolled out individually, is there any way of checking where on the list a particular cabinet sits?

Apologies if this has been answered before, all searches seem to bring back millions of hits. Thanks for your help.

- The cabinets get selected individually.
- No guarantee all cabinets in an exchange area will get upgraded, nor may they get upgraded at the same time.
- Here in N.Ireland they tend to choose cabinets furthest away from the exchange first. No point giving fibre to people near the exchange who already get up to 20mbit or more while the outskirts get less than 5mbit. Whether the same tactic is followed elsewhere i'm not sure.
- Haven't seen any definite lists of cabinets except for in N.Ireland where we have a nice drop down list to pick the exchange and see.

Wasn't done this way here, they started out close to the exchange, and laid the fibre as they went along, further and further out from the exchange. They started work on this exchange in February, and had reached the outskirts by the end of May/Beginning of June. Im told 90% of the cabinets on this exchange were enabled, the only ones not enabled were deemed to be beyond economic return.

I'm not complaining now that i have it. I was on 4mbit ADSL2+ before, and now on FTTC, I can upload faster than that!!

And no, the exchange being enabled, means just that, the exchange end, not every cabinet in an exchange area will be done, here they enabled cabinets in which there was a good chance of some money back from them i.e cabinets serving densely populated areas.

As orly mentioned, we have a website for N.I that tells you more info, I haven't seen such a site elsewhere.

Hi Zarjaz - Really sorry for not responding to your question earlier.

The exchange in question is Chippenham (in Wiltshire) code 01249.

BT is still predicting 30th September on its website, and there are a number of Openreach vans out and about. I talked to one of the Openreach guys the other day who was working on pulling fibre. He was unable to tell me more and suggested I speak to customer services - I haven't done so as yet as I expect they won't tell me anything until the service goes live. Any other views?

Hi Paul, Thanks for this - how can I find out where these cabs are, and what cab I'm fed from? We're at the end of some overhead string, which then goes underground so non-trivial (as far as I can see...)

Although just because 50 is the last cab listed does not mean its the actual last cab there could be a 51...etc..

Easy way is to take a walk and go hunting for the green box with 24 written on it.

Thanks for that. SamKnows says FTTC should have gone live yesterday but Openreach says 30th, which I will believe more. The BT checker still doesn't list it as available/coming soon for any of the postcodes around the enabled cabinets yet so I guess it's a wait and see situation.

No planning permissions for my area that I can see. So that September date is looking rather optimistic.

The only weird thing is, in our area the green cabs are TINY. They're only about 18 inches wide feet wide and 3 ft tall, and they're pretty much empty - just a single big cable loops up inside the cab, then goes back down again - there are no connections that I could see.

Does anyone know when the Wokingham (THWM) exchange will go live for FTTC?

It is supposed to be this month, Samknows has the RFS date as the 01 September but BT Retail seem to think it is 30 September.

I've spoken to a couple of CP's and nobody can take an order until the checker has it as available.

A exchange won't go live until at least 10 cabs are live.
You might be connected to a FTTC cab but it might not be ready yet.

My area has been 'live' for months and BT are still finishing off some cabs here.

Am new on here and trying to get info as to whether my bt cabinet will be fttc enabled. Have been told so many stories I don't know who is telling me the truth! You seem to know a lot about the rollout can you possibly help? I live in Putney and BT's line checker says 30th September. Seen lots of upgraded cabinets around the area but the one I think serves me doesn't look to have been. There is one on an estate behind our house that has been though. Any ideas which cabs will be done and how I can tell which one serves me? Thanks for any help!

John

I'm afraid I can't help much, you seem to be in exactly the same possition as me. Samknows.com has the Putney exchange RFS date as 01 September http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/LSPUT

If you try the BT Wholsale line checker (http://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html) but use the Postcode check not the phone number you may get an idea if you cab is enabled and what speed you may get.

I'm about 1200m from the nearest cab so my estimated line speed, even for FTTC, is 13.9Mbps but it's still a lot faster than the 1.8Mbps I get from Sky LLU.

I guess all we can do is wait.

Hey Paul,

Thanks very much for the reply, which was very helpful. I checked using the postcode checker and it made no mention of FTTC, but when I put my telephone number in, it said my cabinet was planned to have FTTC by 30th september with an estimated speed of 24.5mbps down and 10mbps up. Sounds hopeful! Lets hope its true!

Thanks again,

Also waiting on a FTTC enable date - the given date is September 2010 which seems to be still valid, and the cabinet physically exists - I can't move forward until the FTTC is enabled and I can see some speed test results for people using it:

Is it simply a case of putting the postcode into the BT checker every few days and waiting for a fibre speed to come up among the results?

Check local planning applications as that is a old style cab and needs replacing with a new shell before a FTTC cab be provisioned. (Might be not listed in planning applications).
As a general rule low numbered cabs do get provisioned as they often serve a large number of users.
(Not 100% though)
I don't have any info for the WMWR exchange as yet.
Keep your eyes open for spray paint near by with FTTC wrote in it.

Hi Paul (Bookey),

Thanks for your reply. Spoke to an Openreach engineer the other day and he told me which cabinet was for my line and that it hadn't been upgraded yet. Wasn't sure if it was or wasn't going to be. Do you happen to know? The cabinet has the number 44 printed on the front of it in white numbers. Am on the Putney exchange. Am guessing the wholesale checker wouldn't have predicted speeds and a predicted upgrade date unless the cabinet was likely to be upgraded? Is that a fair assumption?

Thank you for your help.

Its telegraph pole 759 - but am not sure if this is a BT Cabinet or not- as our road is all telegraph poles.

I can tell this one is, but fear its in the wrong place for me.

Do you have any idea how 'often' BT cabinets appear in built up areas (i.e. after how many 100's of metres)?

Yes, mine has now changed from 31st Sept to 31st December! Don't know why the sudden change?

Perhaps because it won't be ready for October.

The one infront of HSBC is cab5.
The other one I am not so sure...

Thanks for the reply. A few meters away from cab 5 is another cab (3, I think - just next to the BT phone box) but where I live the telegraph poles here seem to go: 727, x(unsure), 749, 759 so I guess I should be looking for cab 7?

What obstacles could there be other than planning issues? Our date is 31st December too but it's not a conservation area here.

OK Guys, been trying to find out when I will get FTTC like everyone else and just keep hitting a brick wall.
I am off of Sittingbourne Exchange (NDSIT) and San Knows said 1st Sept 10, BT said 30 Sept 10.
The fibre cab went in 6months ago, the engineers said it was fully connected to the exchange and that the link cable between the cabs was in place...3 months ago.
So I think I am all ready to go. The tester still just gives me ADSL2 speeds...IE 2.2mb.
I am on either Cab 52 or 54 I cannot remember.
So how can i find out when will this become available for Retail? The BT help line says I may never be able to get it? So why all the work if they are not going to make it live...
Someone somewhere must know....

Thanks
Jason

Quite often BT Retail enable exchanges and cabinets based on a marketing plan, not technical availability. Frequently people can get connected via FTTC earlier than BT makes Infinity available to them.

I have a list of FTTC suppliers.

Its telegraph pole 759 - but am not sure if this is a BT Cabinet or not- as our road is all telegraph poles.

Nop - that looks very much like a typical south london NTL/Virgin cab.

So how can i find out when ? I am happy to peruse the market and choose a different supplier if they can give me what I want smile
According to BT, several people (and I dont neccessarily believe them as I used to be an Engineer myself) have said the checker is the only thing they go by as its due to technical abilities of the line which they test in areas randomly to see if available.(Never heard so much drivel).
I did say somewhere, someone, Marketing, planning, engineering... Openreach would have the details..But alas nothing. What with some people posting on here that the checker is saying they have availability but BT say sorry not until December. As the checker says nothing for me and the date is basicly here, I am worried I may never get it!
I know Sittingbourne was pushed because of Iwade.
My thing is who can we put local pressure on nay petition to get this moving or alert them that people want it.
Thanks in advance for the replies.

You are raising several different issues there.

All I'm saying is that if and when the cabinet is enabled then BT Retail may be a bit slow selling Infinity on it. So you can contact the ISPs I list, and more coming soon, and see what's what.

No need to go round them all. They will all know within a day or so of it being ready for service. So one will basically answer for all.

As for putting pressure on Openreach to speed up the commisioning, you can forget that idea.

LOL that's where I dropped it smile
I have been following this thread all the way through, not for my own sake but for friends & family that live in built up areas and what it might mean to them in the near future (lucky so and so's)
I live in a small village with it's own (quite large exchange) and as sad as I am I went for a wander tonight with my dog to see if we had any cabs in the village, sadly for me and probably more importantly for Zak (he had to resort to using a telegraph pole)
We have no cabs whatsoever, everything is underground or up poles but Zak is over the moon with the amount of telegraph poles and wants to go again tomorrow night!
I am quite lucky though, I am on an up to 8 meg line and regularly get 6 meg so can not complain despite having to take Zak for a walk more often.
I wonder if your proximity to a cab will effect your house price, I'm thinking of building a dummy cab in front of the house and painting fttc on it in white aerosol, it might p**s the people off in the posh houses two roads up smile

Rgds
JFDI

- The cabinets get selected individually.
- No guarantee all cabinets in an exchange area will get upgraded, nor may they get upgraded at the same time.
- Here in N.Ireland they tend to choose cabinets furthest away from the exchange first. No point giving fibre to people near the exchange who already get up to 20mbit or more while the outskirts get less than 5mbit. Whether the same tactic is followed elsewhere i'm not sure.
- Haven't seen any definite lists of cabinets except for in N.Ireland where we have a nice drop down list to pick the exchange and see.

What is the accuracy of the BT Wholesale broadand checker? As the checker says this when entering in my phone number:
Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 20.6Mbps and upstream line speed of 9.1Mbps.

It specifically says Your cabinet. So not sure if thats just a generic message to say my exchange is going to be enabled or if actually my cab is going to be enabled.

Any idea's on this?

Hi,
Well all the addresses around where I live which also have new FTTC cabinets installed have 31st Dec, so Putney exchange must be having problems and have been pushed back?

Would you be so kind as to check my local lcab please ? You appear to be a man in the know smile

The old cab has "21" written on it, the new cab next to it has nothing - would it be the same ?

Cab 21 on the Bagshot exchange. Scheduled for enablement on 1st Sept 2010

Much appreciated smile

Yes I'm wanting to know what's the shimmy with Exeter -
Originally scheduled for this month, pushed back to December, and I'm yet to see any openreach work or any cabs installed anywhere in the city.

Lots of spray paint on certain GPO manhole covers and beside certain PCPs but that's it...
... I do hope Openreach don't put it on hold for years frown

Two PCPs concerned about are PCP160 (Mother's) and PCP98 (Mine).

Not so worried about mine as I get 20 meg anyway but mother only gets 3 on a good day...

I am neither but I know when you get this result.

For Telephone Number of a house on Exchange HALIFAX

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 1Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 21.2Mbps and upstream line speed of 9.5Mbps.

You can have FTTC.

------------------------------------------------------

For Telephone Number of a B&B on Exchange WORCESTER

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 5.5Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 7.5Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 500Kbps and downstream line speed of 5Mbps.

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st December 2010. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 24.5Mbps and upstream line speed of 10.9Mbps.

You can, but not yet...

This was nothing to do with the thread, and was it really necessary to copy/paste the whole thing when there are plenty of places you could have linked to?

You have now just made a wonderful mess for people reading this in flat mode.

Agreed.

All he did was copy and paste a pdt from the Bt Openreach NGA microsite.

Well it's exactly the same data that's available in the PDF on the Openreach website. Even if you didn't get it from there, that's the original source of the data and it would have been much easier to just post a link to the PDF if you wanted to.

Edit - just noticed you posted the same data albeit with phase information earlier in the thread! Was there really any need to repost?

this FTTC thing is annoying, my exchange was meant to go "live" on 30th September (SLBC - Beauchief) but according to the BT infinity checker my line still isn't enabled for FTTC...

I went and checked the phone pole we're attached to, the numbers on it were D0 525 if that's any help

Why ? .....and to be pedantic, that's not a DP number, which would be the salient information to glean from your pole.

well I read the thread, absorbed some info about being able to determine what cabinet you're attached to based on what phone pole your house is hooked up to, then went and checked mine, only found those 5 digits so I assumed that must be the information mentioned earlier in this thread

Hi,

I'm in Hemel but quiet a long way from the Exchange. The BT checker only shows my line good for about 2Mb adsl although I do get 5Mb on a good day.
No sign of any local cabinets having Fibre yet. Does any anyone know if they are still putting in new fibre cabinets in Hemel and if so if its like to reach my area (HP1 3AU)?

Thanks

Hi,

I am in Colchester and in the latest round of FTTC Exchange anouncements my exchange (EAHWD) is scheduled to be FTTC enabled by September 2011.

I'm in a residential area on a 6km run and with Opal ADSL2+ I only get around 1.5Mb. So I am wishing away the next year to get FTTC.

1) Can I identify which cabinet I am connected to? Cabling here is all underground so do I have to ask a friendly Openreach engineer or is there a more scientific way?

2) Based on the earlier phases, How soon after the exchange announcements should I expect to see Openreach activity in the area?

3) How long roughly until a list of cabinets to be upgraded for this exchange is available?

Thanks
Mike

Hi there. Just wondered if someone in the know could help me out here...

I'm in Bury St Edmunds (approx 2 miles from the exchange) which was upgraded to fibre in September. We're on a new estate and the nearest fibre cabinets are ~500m down the road towards the town centre. These are on either side of the road and look like they serve the other (older) estates. According to the availability checker I can't get Infinity and the sales team weren't able to tell me any more than that.

The strange thing is I can't find any BT cabinets anywhere on the estate - there must be in excess of 500 homes so I can't see that we would all be connected to the existing cabinets - could we?

Does anyone have a way of checking to see which cabinet I would be hooked up to? No poles or anything - all cables are underground.

Can't believe fibre is so close yet I'm still stuck with a 1.5mb connection!

Hi,

Can someone help me please? I live on on a new large estate in Chippenham (Cepen Park North). This is served from SSCHIp44, which is not to be upgraded (unlike the rest of the town!) Is there an appeals process to BT for single cabinets?

Thanks

I'd suggest you would be more likely to get the attention your question deserves if you started a new topic in the new Fibre Broadband forum. This one is now supposed to be for non-fibre issues.

In any case I think your question deserves it's own topic!

Hi Paul smile

You wouldn't happen to know the Cab Numbers for Connah's Quay Exchange would you? wink

I've found an FTTC cab just a minutes walk up the road from me.
Unfortunately... Never thought to look for a Number blush
It's a bit difficult for me as I'm in a wheelchair.
But my mum is going to check our telephone pole number later on when she walks the dog.
And she'll check the FTTC Cab and the BT Box it's coupled with next time she goes past.

NOTE: There are two other Old BT Boxes in my area...
That I don't think have been given a makeover and a new FTTC Cab just yet.
But I've told my mum to keep look out laugh

Connah's Quay = WNDEE
FTTC Date : 31/12/10
Estimated Speeds...
Down = 18.5
Up = 7.7

Thanks! wink

Hi Paul smile

My mums just had a look at our telephone pole - Number: BT9M982I

Is That Right?

So what should I be looking for on a Cab?

The Full Number?
OR
Would it just be part of it?
Like.. 982 .. OR .. Something?

Thanks! wink

PS.
Mums just told me it was wrote like...
BT
9M
98
2I

There is no direct correllation between the DP number and the cab it is served from.

The markings you gave (which are carved into the pole) mean:
BT - Owner
9M - Height in metres, 'Medium' girth
98 - Year of manufacture
2I - Batch identifier

There will also be number(s) fixed to the pole on white discs that give the DP number, but you can't tell from the DP what cab it's served from - unless you have access to BT's records.

Hi panda smile

Had a feeling that number wasn't right frown
But my mum says she couldn't see any other numbers on the pole.

Even Worse!
Last Night...
My mum went to check the FTTC Cab and the BT Box that it's coupled with.
No Numbers On Them Either blush

One Bit Of Good News!
My mum has just seen the Openreach Men working in the FTTC Cab again.
She said they looked like they were fitting cables into it.
So perhaps they will number it this time. .. Don't Know!

NOTE: The cables have already been laid underground.

Oh - God!
Really Hope It's My Cab.
1) Coz it might be going in the wrong direction to the Exchange... But It's The Closest! ( 322 meters )
2) Two other old BT Boxes close but not as close as the FTTC Cab.
Going in the right direction for the Exchange... But Not FTTC Yet! frown

Thanks! wink

Thanks for the info - this may sound like a stupid question but I have just checked the cabinet closest to me which is approx 60 metres down the road, and it has "PCP19" on both sides in grey paint. This is the smaller of two green cabinets sitting together. Is it safe to assume that "CMWARWp19" is in fact this cabinet?
Will be delighted if it is smile

Hi,

I've just received an email from BT to say that the Infinity service is coming soon in my area. Having checked with the BT website it is advertising the date as 31st December. However, having read this thread it appears that it may not be coming to all cabinets. Does anyone know which cabinets are likely to be activated in Bridgend(South Wales)? I currently live a just over a mile from the exchange but have a cabinet situated in the next street to me. Any info would be really appreciated.

Here in Bath we are are on the ' Kingsmead' exchange & due to get FTTC on December 31st.

I've hunted around for a cabinet & I can't find it, my pole about 10mtrs from the house.
It's code is DP 6733, there are no other markings on it, so how do I find out where our cabinet is?

Hi All, hope this is the right place to post. I'm connected off the East Herington exchange in Sunderland. We're on a new(ish) development that's been up for a few years. Almost all of the development can get FTTC (from cabinets 5 and 7) but there are about 40 of us in the middle who can't get any FTTC as we are on cabinet 6. As we all know its difficult to get info on why cabinet 6 hasn't been done, BT wont give me an answer, but is it possible to pay to get connected to a different cabinet? Both of the FTTC enabled cabinets are no more than 300M away (albeit as the crow flies) I just don't know where to go. My existing ADSL speed is 2.5 Mb down and a whole 320kb up which is practically unusable. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Your best bet would be to start a new thread in the Fibre section. Your question has nothing to do with BT Wholesale. I suspect the answer is yes, you can pay to have the cab upgraded, but I suspect the cost will be prohibitive. The most likely reason it wasn't done when it's neighbours were, is that it only has a relatively small number of lines in it, and therefore wasn't 'cost effective' in the eyes of Openreach.

I've had a response from open reach.
Looks like I have to hope the BDUK comes up trumps.
What annoys me is how a company that has the monopoly, owns all the hardware base a rollout on commercially viability, surely they should be obliged to upgrade all hardware and subsidise lower return cabinets with more profitable ones .

"Dear Sir,

Thank you for your enquiry about fibre broadband at Worle exchange cabinet 25. Our deployment is based on the commercial criteria for each cabinet and your cabinet fails to meet the commercial criteria. This is because the cabinet has too few premise connected to it, rendering it too small to provide a return on the investment based on the costs for the construction and on-going running costs of providing a new FTTC cabinet. When calculating the commercial viability of cabinet areas we take many factors into account. These include ensuring that we locate the cabinets in accordance with all national and local planning laws, ensuring that the cabinet does not obstruct pedestrians or provide a danger to all road-users. We must ensure that the DSLAM is located within 100m of its associated telephony connection cabinet and that there is adequate access to power and existing telephony infrastructure. To further enable the location of the DSLAM, we must accurately survey for underground structure and obstacles etc.
We do look at the demographic nature of the potential customers within a cabinets working area, however, we focus on the amount of connected lines at the time and not the potential expansion within a cabinet area as this is not guaranteed - this is the most efficient way to deploy fibre broadband whilst keeping within our finite budget. As such we look at the potential return for our investment over quite a number of years, with the prospective number of take up of the service being a large percentage of households.

Where cabinets are not commercially viable Government funding is available to county and borough councils via the BDUK initiative, (details about BDUK are available here - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/bduk-broa... )
Your county council has sought funding with BDUK and in partnership with BT, your cabinet may be upgraded. However the areas for deployment are still being and planned, for details and further enquiries please go to the website - http://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/
If you have any further questions, please ensure you have read the FAQ's on our website, http://www.openreachfibrebroadband.co.uk/faq/ . If your question is answered within the FAQ section, we will not respond to your e-mail.

Actually this is precisely what they're obliged not to do. It would be unfair to any other operator who wanted to deploy FTTC for Openreach to be able to use their economies of scale to cross-subsidise.
