21CN WBC status date kept changing - is this normal?

[link to this post]

According to Samknows, my exchange had the RFS date set for "21CN WBC" for July 2011.

Then it got changed to end of Sept 2011.

Now it's end of Oct 2011.

Is this normal?

And once it's set up, how long until ISPs can use it to offer me ADSL2+ ?

Thanks,

You have to use this checker as many isp use this one: http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome and once it say ADSL2+ is there, then you can ask your ISP to put you over to BT 21CN ADSL2+ but there will be 7 working days before you are swtiched over.

Thanks. This is what I got after entering my telephone number

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 5.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 4.5Mbps and 6.5Mbps.

Your exchange is planned to have ADSL2+ by 31st October 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 6Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 4Mbps and 8Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1Mbps and downstream line speed of 6Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 4Mbps and 8Mbps.

I am currently on ADSL Max and only get 3.3Mbps (the checker above states 5.5Mbps lol)

So it looks like I'll have to wait until end of next month... hopefully the date will not change!

What is your downstream line attenuation db for your ADSL (up to 8 Meg) because ADSL2+ will be an extra line attenuation db between 2db and 3db extra once it goes live.

My ADSL before was 30db 6.5Meg 15.9db SNR and then on ADSL2+ 33db 13.5Meg 3.1db SNR

Mine has been changing as well.

When mine was first announced, it was set for RFS: 30/11/2011.

Last month it went to 31/12/2011

And now it is back to 30/11/2011.

At least with dates of the end of October then November it implies there is an imminent possibility. Quarter-end dates are the bad ones as they are pretty meaningless.

My exchange had a WBC date of October 2010. Shortly before that date was reached it was removed and now there is no WBC date at all!
In the meantime it moved from Market 2 to Market 3 designation because it now has four providers with equipmenin the exchange, only BT haven't changed the status.
MY BT line sync speed has dropped by almost 1 mbs in two steps, BTR think that the exchange is WBC enabled, but the date for it to happen has been removed and there is no date for that or FTTC.
So BT not only change dates whenever they want, they even change their minds totally.

Been speaking to my ISP and they have informed me that my local exchange has finished the upgrade for 21CN network. I will get ADSL2+ within 10 days.

Hurrah!

So if you've been waiting for your local exchange to be enabled, check with them. smile

Do not rely on what you are told - in late October I was told by the ISP that I would get ADSL2+ in 4 weeks, at the end of 4 weeks, it went out another 10 working days and yesterday I was told definitely by the 15 December - they did not say which year.

Indeed... 10 days has passed. Nothing. Checked with ISP, they said BT has delayed the switch on for 2 weeks. Bah humbug!

Re: 21CN WBC status date kept changing- now ACTIVATED But...

[re: hypertony] [link to this post]

Annnnd finally, today, I have been transferred over to ADSL2+!

However disappointing speed.

Download speed remained the same. But the upload speed is now 3 x faster (was 256, now around 660).

What can I do to improve the download speed? I'm going to move the router to the master socket and see what it's reporting...

I'm using Draytek Vigor 2800. Am I best off with getting a new router or is it my internal phone line?

Cheers

Its more or less not possible to say, without your router stats, in particular your attenuation figure, the down being of interest as it has great bearing on what you can achieve.

Here's the details from my router - not been rebooted since the auto switch from ADSL to ADSL2+:

ADSL Status Mode: ADSL2+
Up Speed: 777900
Down Speed : 3218300
SNR Margin: 9.0
Loop Att.: 40.5

I have now since rebooted the router. Here's the updated details:

ADSL Status Mode: ADSL2+
Up Speed: 781200
Down Speed : 3286000
SNR Margin: 9.0
Loop Att.: 40.0

I think that's the first set of stats you have posted smile.

That looks very much like wiring problems at your end.

You should have been connecting at over 7Mbps, with 5-6Mbps download speeds, and now on ADSL2+ should be towards the higher end of 8-11Mbps connection. Not 3286kbps.

Though your noise margin of 9dB is taking off 700-1200kbps. Again pointing to a problem somewhere.

Have a read of (most of) my Troubleshooting section. Also see what stats you get with a setup of computer >> ethernet cable (or wireless) >> router >> short ADSL cable >> dangly filter >> test socket, (on the wall at the back in this pic.

If I'm using the "crow fly straight" method to the exchange, it's around 0.8 miles. So I should be getting better down/upload speed, correct?

I'll give your troubleshooting page a read over the weekend and see what I can achieve.

Cheers.

Re: 21CN WBC status date kept changing- now ACTIVATED But...

[re: hypertony] [link to this post]

Any distance you measure is irrelevant once you know the attenuation. Attenuation is a real-time measure of the effect of distance on your connection. It depends on the actual length and quality of the cabling, which can be way different from the "crow flies" or even the road map route. The higher the attenuation the lower your connection speed.

As I said, with your attenuation you should have had well over 7Mbps on ADSL, and now be heading towards 11Mbps on ADSL2.

You really do need to get the stats from the test socket, connecting the way I specified smile. But don't do lots of disconnections within an hour. A few is safe.

Thanks for the additional details, now make sense.

While we're on this, here's the latest stats - have not rebooted or moved the router to the test socket yet...

Up Speed: 867800
Down Speed : 3519700
SNR Margin: 5.0
Loop Att.: 41.0

Is this a sign of the line being "settled down" after the ADSL2+ upgrade? Should I wait until the 7 days training period finishes, or should I go ahead and test it from the test socket?

Cheers.

Go ahead and try the test socket.

Incidentally it's 10-day training, not 7, and it is completely irrelevant in your case. See this page. As your sync is hideously below what it should be, all that is happening is that the Maximum Stable Rate and Fault Thrwshold Rate that it sets will be highly disadvantageous to you.

Once we find the cause of the low speed and get it corrected, you will need to ask for a fresh 10-day period to set things correctly.
