ADSL2+ instead of VDSL

I have recently failed to get Infinity installed due to my line length, 3KM over poles from the cabinet.

Would it be possible to install ADSL2+ technology in the new Fibre cabinets, instead of VDSL, for those on a long line?

That way I could possibly get 10M or more instead of the 2.5M at the moment as I am 6Km from the exchange.

You can get BT broadband option 3 (with fibre) its capped @ 20mbps

plusnet will also let you install VDSL if its above 5Mbps.

Unfortunately when they connected Infinity the sync speed was 0.1M so any VDSL based product is impossible.
That's why I was wondering if they can put ADSL2+ hardware in the green cabinet.

They don't put any ADSL2+ hardware in cabs; only FTTC.

ADSL2+ is supplied down your normal phone line from your exchange, but only if exchange is 21CN WBC enabled or you have an LLU supplier.

last time I looked long lines did better at a given distance on VDSL2 than ADSL2 so I think your hypothesis may not be true.

Otherwise it would be technically possible - sub loop unbundling -, but usually xDSL standards fall backwards as the line requires so as above I wouldn't be certain you would gain.

According to that graph, you should of had about 6Mb on vdsl2 when they hooked up your fttc, so not sure why your's was so low.

Anyway, getting back to your main question in your first post. The answer is Yes.
BT Openreach and others have been doing it for some time now. They call it SLU, Sub Loop Unbundling.

It's basically what Rutland were doing in rural areas I believe.

@OP - I'm 600 metres from the cabinet, so according to that graph I can't get over 20Mbps on FTTC. I've had a solid 40Mbps connection for over 15 months, and if I upgraded to 80/20 I could expect around 59Mbps.

That's what seems a bit confusing.

I am on ADSL2+ with O2 and at 6km from the exchange I get 2.5M
Surely ADSL2+ from the cabinet, halfing my line length, would give me a good speed increase.
VDSL from the cabinet, which is 3KM away, only gives 0.1M.

So VDSL2, over a 6km line (back to a cabinet) should be able to connect at more than 4Mbps?

Is there a cut-off point (beyond which ADSL2+ gains a speed advantage) or does OR's implementation of FTTC give ADSL "like" speeds [using VDSL2] over really long lines?
The main reason for doubt [that VDSL2 always equals or betters ADSL performance] is there are plenty of posts from people who've switched, to FTTC, from ADSL (or ADSL2+) only to find their connection speed is a fraction of their old ADSL/ADSL2+ speeds.

It would be good to collect some line stats from these plenty of people.

The cross talk from ADSL2+ from the cabinet would cause chaos for other ADSL2+ lines. VDSL2 avoids most of this by using different frequencies

Alas if you are one of the 1% with a very very long cabinet to home line then VDSL2 will be less than ideal

It was strange that they did the cabinet where they did, there are only about 30 houses within 1.5km of the cabinet and if half of those go for fibre it means they did all that work for 15 connections.

We have a small cabinet in our village that supports some 30 odd properties, this wasn't upgraded to FTTC.

Our cabinet was over a year late being installed. During that time my adsl service did appear to improve. So it may be that you can eek a bit more speed out of the adsl once people start moving over to FTTC services in your area.

I wonder if openreach will offer you a fibre to the premises on demand install next year? Even if it costs ~£1000 if you weren't planning on moving would probably be worth it.

Not likely, as the fibre would have to be laid from the FTTC cabinet to the premises. A lot more than £1000 over that distance.
