Any openreach (external) old hands on here?

[link to this post]

Anyone about on here who knows the status of sending air up main cables from the exchange these days?

Someone has stolen the air supply from main cables at 2 sites on opposite sides of London.

There was an OR phone number (which is now out of service) to report these things to - however no one seems to know that we used to send air down cables in the 1st place.

Anyone on the job no if its been given up on for all but the most major cables, or is there still a way to report it out?

Stolen the air supply? They nicked the exchange compressor?

More likely a leak en route.

I thought about leaks - any idea on how to try and even report it out to someone who has a clue?

Forgive my ignorance but why is air sent down the cables?

To keep the cable dry.
E-Side and Junction cables may use conductors wrapped with a paper insulator. Air is forced into the cable at the exchange to maintain a positive pressure, which keeps moisture out.

There's more about cable pressurisation in this 1969 Post Office training booklet for staff.

Does anyone at the exchanges even check alarms these days or look at the gauges?

My oldest cables have the original GPO gauges and alarm blocks (though look damaged now) the newest one also had a flow detector on, but again I don't think anyone has noticed.
