WBC ADSL2+ - Confusion

[link to this post]

I checked my phone number this morning as I do quite often to see any changes.

Now currently my connection is around 0.75mbs, quite shocking really.

But I noticed this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6jqetdg6jo19xuc/cradd.JPG

WBC ADSL 2+ Up to 1 -- 1 to 3.5 Capacity expected 14 May 2014

can anyone shed some light on what this means? as the downstream range looks better but the downstream line is the same.

Range is just a measure of their uncertainty. What is your actual attenuation, noise margin and connection speeds?

http://www.coolwebhome.co.uk/calc will do the sums and show if you are in the right ball park.

The capacity is a line card ports issue, i.e. waiting on some more hardware before people can order.

Posting the link that the page gives you would have been simpler, and let us also view the line stats.

What I can see is that you have 63.5db attenuation, so the line is long and thus the checker is giving about as good as it can manage. Some people get less speed that you with that stat, and others faster.

here are the stats:

ADSL Link................................Downstream ...............Upstream
Connection Speed ................... 983 kbps ................... 483 kbps
Line Attenuation ..................... 63.5 db ..................... 44.7 db
Noise Margin .......................... 5.8 db ....................... 5.3 db

(BTW - often the sync speed is under 800kbps so that gives a 0.5mbs bras profile)

So it looks like even with an exchange upgrade its not going to affect this particular lines speed.

ISTR that 63.5db was often a limit of many devices firmware and the actual attenuation may be higher.
I doubt ADSL2+ would benefit you, but forcing to ASDL2 may get you enough to reach 1Mbits profile.
The reality is that you wont get a great increase with any exchange based technology.

Would hazard a guess your real attenuation is around the 80dB mark, suggesting a telephone line in the 7km to 9km distance. To benefit from most cabinet based services you really need the cabinet to be ideally less than 1km away, but even if 2km you might see your speeds increase to 5 Mbps which would be vastly more useful than current speeds.

Do you know what ADSL Mode, ADSL1 or ADSL2+, you are currently operating on? What did you feed into that line speed calculator? Your Up sync > 448 indicates ADSL2+.
In reply to a post by Tommer:

Not if you are on ADSL2+. IPP = 88.2% of sync ~= 700K.

Would be worth trying to force router into G.DMT or ADSL2 modes.

Unforuantely its a netgear router so unless I telnet and fiddle I can't modify it.

Which model and version of Netgear? The most common are extremely easy to use telnet to modify the mode.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 59.4/14.4Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

I'd be surprised, I've not yet come across a DSL line that would sync at anything over 75db.

Are you still on 20CN or have you been moved to 21CN? If you don't know run a BT speed test and then run the further diagnostics. If you are on 20CN it will give you the data for download only and on 21CN it gives up and down.

Being on 21Cn (even if it is ADSL1 on 21CN) has a big advantage in that you don't have those fixed bras profiles that can take ages to change. Your IP Profile will immediately be set at 88.2% of the sync speed every time you resync.

See Tweaking through the CLI on this page.

You need the Debug command and after that adslctl configure --mod2

That gives ADSL2 instead of 2+.
