Heavy duty router which can handle bittorrent

[link to this post]

Hey,

I've been looking over the forums and reviews section for ADSL modem/router/wireless combinations [am i wrong or was that not updated since a year ago? :-\] for a router which is going to be more or less solid. I've been [censored] off in the past by linksyses and belkins etc etc which seem to fall over as soon as I start doing any kind of heavy duty bittorrenting or DC++ing etc. Friends have had similar levels of failure with these kind of routers. I've even tried setting up an IPCop box at one point with both a USB Alcatel modem and a a PCI ADSL card, the modems still got hugely confused.

This is worrying as I'm about to move into a house with 5 other heavy duty users, we'll be sharing an 8mbit connection, and most of us are keen peer to peer users, meaning there's even more chance of a weak router being overwhelmed and freaking out.

Could anyone suggest a real powerhorse of a router please? Prepared to spend more than for your average piece of [censored] in PC World but not crazy money either

Cheers...
Adam

You may want to look into getting a Draytek router, e.g.

http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2910.html in combination with a speedtouch 510v6/516v6/546v6

Well, actually, thanks for the recommendation of the vigor routers but I'm thinking that even 160 for the the VIGOR2800VG [including vat, delivery etc] is a bit steep :-\ is there anything less expensive than that? I know it's asking a lot, but surely in the 80-100 range there must be a little gem hiding away? wishful thinking

Great that's a better price - thanks. That has an ADSL modem built in, right?

I have a Draytek Vigor 2800VG and apart from a few niggily issues with remote access, the router does seem to be pretty damn good.

The firewall for example is very thorough.

My SNR has improved by about 5db compared to my old Netgear DG834G v2.
It's also really really handy to have 2 VoIP ports built in which will accept any analogue phone, so you get a second phone line for free if you want.

Cisco's are also excellent routers but need a little knowledge of the IOS in order to configure them, I'm not sure of any that have a web front-end?

The Draytek's have a variant of Linux as their OS which proves to be very reliable and can hold a live state for months without a reboot.

It's up to you to decide as to which manufacturer to go for but I would put Cisco & Draytek at the top of the pile in regards to their ability to handle multiple simultaneous TCP connections (e.g Bit Torrent.)

Hope this helps you in a decision.

That does help - thanks everyone

I took the plunge and bought the DrayTek Vigor2800VG, as although a Cisco would be great, the ones on eBay were of course second hand, and this DrayTek sounds very promising for handling lots of connections and users... VoIP a nice extra... and the relief from having to deal with dodgy piece of [censored] routers like the cheap Belkins I've had in the past will easily be worth the money. Cheers!

CRWS and SDM are the front ends for web config on cisco's. Not brilliant IMHO but will get you started.
