ZyXELs Prestige 662HW or Draytek Vigor 2800G ?

[link to this post]

Afternoon All.

I'm in the market for a new router. I have the Netgear dg384 wired router which is great - on an 8mb connection (Bulldog) - Cannot recall the last problem I have had with this router and/or Bulldog.

ZyXELs Prestige 662HW or Draytek Vigor 2800G ? (or anything else?)

Can somebody suggest which may be the better buy? I have one PC and two laptops. I would like somethng that once setup, doesnt require constant maintenance.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Cheers
Steggles.

Obvious question is - why change, epecially if you're happy with what you have. If it's because you need to add support for wireless, that can be done without replacing the router.

Do you have any other specific requirements that your current router doesn't support?

Thanks for the reply.

Primarily to add wireless support, the firewall doesn't seem to work correclty, cannot seem to work out why it won't send out email logs/alerts. Various little things such as that.

The unit hasn't missed a beat really - I haven't logged into the router for atleast 10 months, so it works just fine on that score. I have a netgear pcmcia wireless adapter if that helps you.

I do have an apple airport extreme but that is a door stopper at the moment. I would like a router with voip support in the back of the unit, but that's no big loss is not.

Print server built in would be ideal.

Does that help you?

then you may want to look at the zyxel p2602hw (l) if you want voip, rather than the 662hw

Mines ok, although I cant say its had uptime of 10 months, I turn off with thunder etc and theres issues with my line which cause me to occassionally have to reboot but its nothing to do with the router, it was fine with a fixed line speed. It will quite happily stay up for weeks/months though.

Although if I was to replace it I would probably buy a draytek but I wont be doing that anytime soon

I know people with both and I feel that although the zyxel is good that the draytek has more features/control for the money and is probably a little more stable over a longer period.

Zyxel support is first rate though - cant knock them on every email I have sent I have had a reply the next working day.

If you are considering a draytek, and don't need teleworker LAN consider the 2700G (for price and max stability) over the 2800G.

Another small point if you're considering the DrayTek Vigor2800G is that if you want VoIP included as you state above, then it's the 2800VG you need.

Thank you for the suggestions chaps.

About the Draytek(s) ..Once up and running, do they just keep on going and going? Every piece of netgear equipment I have had has been faultless. I want something that doesnt need to be attended too each week/month.

I suspect that that is too much to ask, no?

Although my DrayTek Vigor2800VG never needs "attending to" as you put it, it sometimes spontaneously reboots itself for no apparent reason. However, although this is obviously not desirable it always reconnects quickly, and it does seem otherwise reliable for what I use it for which is mainly VoIP, Binary Usenet, some FTP, some P2P, and the usual browsing and email.

I do not use some of the features such as wireless and VPN, so I can't comment on those aspects of its reliability.

So in my experience, although it does not stay connected for weeks/months on end, it still does not need any periodic user intervention.
