Draytek Vigor Equipment

[link to this post]

Mornin All,

This may be an incredibly daft question, however. Does the Vigor 2700 and 2800 series of wireless routers/xyz include a DSL modem?

I previously asked between a ZyXel or a Draytek in a different thread, however I need an all-in-one solution.

I'm browsing google and draytek for an answer. Don't really want to shell

Hi

Before opting for either of these products I'd recommend you have a good look through the posts at http://www.draytek.co.uk/forum/index.php? (you'll probably have to register).

Both the 2700 and the 2800 routers have modems but the 2700 doesn't have a print server.

The 2800 is an excellent router but it's modem performance is poor (unstable) on anything but an ideal line. People who can connect at 8128 don't seem to have problems but many people on longer lines suffer daily retrains.

The 2700 has a very good modem but the router is flawed, particularly in UK spec. For the UK market they have inhibited the VPN server (not the pass-through facility) and various other useful functions. The trouble is that there is no clear indication of what functions the UK version supports. People look in the 'global' manual and find that they cannot set things up, they then post in the forum and are told that that function is not present in the UK version. Draytek UK are supposed to be bringing out a manual specifically for the UK version because there are so many differences but it has yet to appear. I can only assume that SEG/Draytek UK are inhibiting some functions in the UK V2700 to protect sales of the V2800. Some people are buying V2700s from Europe and getting the 'global' spec version.

This post is based on personal experience with a V2800G, V2700VG and a non UK V2700.

HTH - Andy

Thanks for the information - much appreciated.

Can you reccommend any other wireless router with modem and (idealy) + print server?

...Or even a slightly cheaper wireless router/modem without a print server and I suppose I could purchase one.

Does not need to be a draytek.

Many Thanks.

Except it's not accurate, or very detailed.

That was my thought too. My guess is when they run out of 2800s they will release a uk 2810 with the same spec as international version of the 2700 (with the 2700's board and chipset)....and charge 2800 prices for it.

This is only a suggestion. You might want to consider a used V2600G from eBay - they seem to go for

The 2600VG is certainly excellently stable - the print server worked well, too (when it was close enough to my printer ).

Held a decent sync on my dodgy line - enough for 2Mb (with 61dB attenuation) - other routers get a higher sync (ZyXEL got 2.5Mb, Speedtouch 585 almost 3Mb!) but less stable than the 2600 which - before switching routers - hadn't dropped the connection in almost 60 hours.

Great firewall rules, great for p2p (conn. table size: 15,000 vs. the 585's 2048), good WiFi speed for a fairly old device, just an all-round great router (with VoIP to boot on the VG).

I think I actually prefer it to the Speedtouch, so I might end up switching back myself.

now NAMESCO HomeMax+ - at 2.5Mb sync at ADSLguide

I updated my trusty old VIgor 2600We to one of the 2800s, but was unimpressed by the wireless range and stability. Then I realised I could buy a Speedtouch 585 for half the price. Rock solid, DMT tool available and despite the tiny aerial, gives me 54Gb wireless through the house (which has brick internal walls). I think Vigors are now vastly overpriced....

I have had a 2600, and now run a 2800, I sync at best about 4000, and I find the 2800 is as stable as anything else I've tried.
Yes the wireless range is a bit poor.
I have also tried a Belkin 7633, a Speedtouch 546, and a Netgear 834, and none of those come even close to the facilities and configuration features of the Draytek.
VPN, Virtual Lans, QOS, bandwith limits, URL filtering, IM filtering, P2P filtering, Web content filters, plus many many others that I can't be bothered to type in.
Useful CLI features like maxdnrate, to fix the max sync speed, useful for me to never let it go above 4000, for it to fail overnight and sync lower.
The security feature are especially good for people with children to time their access to IM or the web, as well as blocking p2p and dodgy websites.
